The Grand-daddy of mordern fantasy fiction, John Ronald Reuel Tolkien's Epic The Lord of the Rings is still as popular 50 years after it was first published.  It has grown in popularity after the release of 'The Fellowship of the Ring' in cinemas Dec 2001 and The Two Towers' in Dec 2002 ( with The Return of the King in 2003 ).

If you don't know the gist of the story of The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings, then you're probably in the wrong site...Most people cut their fantasy teeth on The Hobbit (that or the Chronicles of Narnia), and the Graphic Novel version (which is not as bad as it might first appear to die-hard fans) will get them even earlier (if the cartoon Gollum doesn't scare them off!).

'The series that defined the fantasy genre.  Hobbits, Elves, Dwarves, Wizards, and men inhabit Tolkien's vivid and inspiring realm, where Morgoth, the Great Enemy, seeks to rule in the Silmarillion, while his evil minion Sauron is the Enemy that Frodo and his companions must defeat in the Lord of the Rings...'
