ESTABLISHING RAPPORT/RELATIONSHIP
Process |
Try questions such as: |
Move from REFERRAL to RELATIONSHIP |
So, _______ (your doctor) referred you because he/she feels that _______ (you have an addiction)...
- What do YOU feel about that?
- Do you think that is realistic? How so/How is it not?
- What would you rather begin with?
- What do you see as the problem?
- What effect do you think the problems is having on your life at the moment?
Use your skills to "reframe" the problem or referral reason so no one feels blamed and the client can describe from his/her own words how the problem is affecting his/her life.
Establishing Role and Purpose |
- What have you heard about this program?
- What do you know about Case Management?
- What sort of help do you think you could use at this time?
ASSESSING STRENGTHS (see also Rapp’s Book)
Process |
Try questions such as: |
Using Strengths |
- How have you achieved success (or done this) in the past?
- What skills/resources did you use?
- Who helped you in the past?
GOAL SETTING AND PLANNING
Process |
Try questions such as: |
Specify realistic goals |
- What do you want your life to look like in 3 months (short term) and 3 years (long term).
- What specific change would you like to be able to make?
- What would you have to do to be able to make those changes?
Identify priorities for focus of client work |
- Individuals
– with whom do you want to improve your interactions?
- Situations
– where do you want to begin?
- Actions
– how are you going to do it?
Describe desirable conditions for change |
- Timing:
When would be the best time to begin?
- Preparation:
What do you need to do to prepare other people or What do other people need to know?
Identify specific actions |
- What will you say and how will you say it?
- What will you do and how will you do it?
Anticipate consequences |
- What can happen? Might happen? Probably will happen?
- How might other people respond, productively and nonproductively?
Develop alternatives |
- What will you do if other people do not respond as you hope?
- What will you do if things do not work out as planned?
- What is plan B? If it doesn’t work today, when do you try again?
Identify potential ambushes |
- What might prevent your plan from succeeding?
- What conditions, over which you have no control, might play an important part?
- What surprises might you get when other people are caught unprepared?
Measuring informal supports |
- Who can you tell about this plan who will help you?
- Who knows you will succeed?
- Who has helped you in the past when you had trouble?
- Who thinks that you might fail?
- What will ___________ say when you reach your goal?
- Who will you tell first when you succeed?
Decision Balance |
There is give and take to any change (good change or bad change)...
- What are things about your life that you like now OR what is working well for you now?
- What will you miss when you change (about alcohol, substance use, not working, this relationship, etc) – examples that a client might say are "I don’t have any friends that don’t use – I'll lose my friends", "I'll miss how the drug makes me feel", "The drug dulls the pain – so life will be harder".
