Newfound Dangers |
The doors slid shut and the small room gave a lurch. My eyes shot wildly around the compartment. I *knew* this wasn't right. I felt stupid to have trusted these vampires. God, I wanted to kick myself. No more than that I wanted to hurt the ones that put me in this predicament in the first place. |
I turned sharply, knowing there wasn't much room to maneuver inside this space. My eyes narrowed dangerously, the growl worked its way up from my chest. The air was heavy with tension and something I couldn't quite define. This was a trap and I had fallen for it. I didn't know whom I was angrier with, them or myself. |
My body dropped into a low crouch as I prepared to launch myself at one or both of them. I wasn't sure which I wanted at that precise moment. They must have sensed the change in me because they both became wary. Their posture was tense and the brunette's eyes flicked to somewhere over my head. |
Curiosity had me wanting to see what he was looking at but I refused to be suckered again. I kept my eyes trained on the pair. There was another small ring and the doors slid open. Before either could react I shot out the doors and down a corridor. I wanted to put as much distance as possible between them and me. |
I stopped and took in my surroundings. There were several people here. Their heartbeats sounded obscenely loud to my ears. Some hidden part of me told me they weren't food, but that didn't mean I couldn't enjoy the panic and utter terror my mere presence would inspire. |
A few steps later my stomach reminded me that I *had* to eat first. Other wise they might just become the food my body so desperately needed. My nostrils flared catching a faint scent. That smell had my mouth watering. It was fear. That lovely smell pulled me down hallways, and past closed doors. It promised a good hunt and a full belly, both of which I was in dire need of. |
My body slowed at the open doorway. The room was sterile. The smell of disinfectants hung heavy in the air, but over that was the heady perfume of terror. Chrome surfaces gleamed as far as the eye could see. At the end of one table was a woman of indiscriminate years. She could have been twenty or forty and no one would have been able to accurately guess. Her blonde hair was pulled back, leaving her triangular face unadorned. |
My feet moved without conscious thought from me. This woman reminded me vaguely of someone, someone that was very close to me. Her voice was rough with panic. "You want me to do what," she screeched. I cringed. That was not the voice I had been expecting. I had been expecting a sweet lilting voice to calm the ache in my head and heart. |
"You heard me," a male voice answered, and my eyes snapped to him. My upper lip peeled back from my teeth, and growled so soft that it rumbled only my chest. What was *he* doing here? I ducked down making sure that I could keep an eye on him but be unseen by that vampire. |
"Fine," the woman snapped and it would have sounded convincing if her voice hadn't quavered. Her hands shook as she prepared something on the table in front of her. "If this goes wrong I don't want to be the one she comes after." |
Their words made little sense to me. What did catch my eye though was the piece of raw meat being flipped by the blonde woman. My stomach clenched painfully and had I been alone I would have given in to the urge to whimper in pain and longing. Something pulled at the edge of my mind and I turned slightly and could hear the faint sound of creaking leather. |
My eyes shot wide. The other vampire! Moving as quickly and cautiously as possible I crept underneath a table and waited. The blonde demon swept into the room his coat billowing around him. He walked right past me never pausing. Either they were stupid or preoccupied; I was hoping for the latter. "You might want to step that up mate," he said as he approached the group. "She was seen heading this way not too long ago." |
The brunette's eyes scanned the area and I held my breath hoping against hope that he didn't spot me. I guess that he wasn't searching as carefully as I thought he was because he turned back to the woman. "Is it ready yet," he asked impatience clear in his tone. |
The blonde woman handed the dark haired demon a container. The smells emanating from it had my mouth watering and stomach cramping violently. I watched as they left taking the sweet smell of food with them. The woman began to clean up, the smell of disinfectant overpowering even in this large room. |
I snorted and the blonde jerked upright, her eyes scanning and landing on where I now stood in the aisle. Her body tensed and her mouth opened. I felt my body drop into a crouch preparing to attack should she bring others in here. When she closed her mouth I relaxed slightly. She seemed to understand that I didn't want to hurt her unless I had to. |
The blonde turned her back to me and went back to cleaning up. I cocked my head not really understanding her behavior, but I didn't give more than a second's thought as I turned and followed the smell of food. I knew I shouldn't trust those two but my stomach was empty. |
Keeping to the shadows as much as I could and still follow the scent of sustenance I wended my way through to the upper levels of this massive building. After quite some time I finally spotted the pair of vampires standing in a doorway. Their voices carried down to where I was trying to hide behind a large potted plant. |
"You're such a bleedin' git," the blonde yelled. |
"Do you have a better plan, William," the brunette countered. |
"As a matter of fact I do," Spike said crossing his arms over his chest. |
Angel waited and when an answer was not forthcoming he demanded, "Well!" |
Spike pierced the elder vampire with his crystalline blue eyes. "We use the darts like they did with the wolf." |
"That's got to be the dumbest thing you've ever said, *Spike. *" |
The blonde sniffed indignantly. "Not any dumber than what you're proposing we do now." |
It wasn't until that moment that I noticed the meat that was carefully cradled in the older demon's hands. Spike's hand shot out sending it flying through the open doorway. Angel lunged at the blonde. The two exchanged blows, slowly but steadily moving away from the door. |
Only when they rounded the corner and the faint sounds of fighting could still be heard did I move. Cautiously I crept towards the room. My nose was twitching and stomach grumbling from lack of fare. My eyes shot down the corridor waiting to see them reappear. When that didn't happen I darted into the room. |
The need for food was overwhelming, and I wolfed down what was in front of me not bothering to take the time to chew it properly. I closed my jaws a couple times and swallowed, and repeated the process until there was nothing left. |
My legs gave out on me, and suddenly my head was fuzzy. There was something... some piece I was missing. My tongue darted out to lick my muzzle when I realized what had happened. The meat had been tainted. It was nothing overt that I would have smelled the minute I walked up on it. No this was fast acting, with very little after taste. There was nothing that any shifter would have been able to recognize. My last conscious thought was I was going to make those two pay for tricking me again. |
