Chapter Sixteen

Rey paced the floor inside the living room rapidly as Tala watched him warily from the couch. She could sense his anger and frustration but was unsure of what had caused it. She wanted to speak but didn’t wish to upset him any further. She sighed softly as she stood…and froze as he quickly whirled around to face her, his eyes glittering in the soft sunlit room.

“Where you going baby?” he asked in a soft voice that was little more than a growl. Tala swallowed nervously even as she felt her body responding to his tone.

“J-Just to get a drink Rey I’m thirsty,” she whispered softly. She watched some of the unusual light leave Rey’s eyes and his body slowly relax as he ran a frustrated hand through his hair.

“I’m sorry baby I didn’t mean to be so short with you,” he said in a softer voice as he walked over to her. Tala sighed softly and closed her eyes as he reached out and ran a gentle hand down her cheek, turning into his touch with a soft sound that could only be classified as a small growl. Rey smiled at the sound.

“What would you like sweetheart? I’ll go get it for you,” he offered, his instincts telling him she would be safer staying in the living room. Tala thought for a moment.

‘Have any soda?” she asked hopefully. Rey chuckled softly and shook his head. He rarely drank the stuff. But he’d make damn sure to start having some around now.

“Unfortunately I ran out,” he lied smoothly. Tala sighed again in disappointment. She really wanted some caffeine right about then.

“Ice water would be ok I guess,” she finally shrugged. Rey nodded softly and placed a gentle lingering kiss on her forehead before turning and hurrying from the room. Tala sank back down on the couch, absently rubbing at a spot on the side of her neck that was burning slightly and beginning to feel a bit lightheaded. Last thing she needed was to get sick right now!

Rey hurried into the kitchen and growled, tensing and poised to change and pounce as the backdoor suddenly flew open. He immediately relaxed as Randy and Edge hurried through the door, anxiety and the adrenaline from their run radiating from their forms.

“So what’s the plan Pops?” Edge asked as he snapped his gum. Rey growled, more than a little irritated by his insolence but knew now wasn’t the time to get into it with him. Randy shot Edge an aggravated look before turning to Rey.

“Is she still here? Is she safe?” he asked in a more respectful tone. Rey inclined his head slightly as he grabbed the bottled water from the fridge.

“She’s sitting in the living room. She was thirsty and I felt it safer to leave her in there,” he replied. Edge looked to Rey and slowly grinned.

“The hottie from the meeting? The redhead the Kid here has been…” his voice trailed off in a whoosh as Randy elbowed him rather abruptly in the stomach, stealing some of the air from his lungs. Rey’s eyes flashed as he glanced from Edge to Randy but he said nothing as he turned and stalked from the kitchen. Once he was gone Edge turned to Randy, annoyance clearly written on his face.

“If you can’t keep your fucking mind on anything other than keeping those damn hunters out there from skinning our leader alive then get the FUCK out of here!” Randy growled, his eyes darkening as the wolf surged forward. Edge’s own eyes flashed as an answering growl rumbled up from deep in his chest.

“I don’t take orders from YOU pup!” he snapped as he turned his head and spit his gum into the trash, his eyes never leaving Randy’s. Randy felt his gums begin to tingle, signaling the start of a transformation and he clenched his jaws together tight as he struggled to rein the wolf back in.

“I am Rey’s second in command NOT you! Disobeying ME is like disobeying a DIRECT order from Rey himself! Are you ready to challenge him?” Randy’s voice was mocking. Before Edge could snarl out a response there was a tap at the back door. As one both men whirled around to face the unknown threat and relaxed slightly as they spotted Cena and Helmsley peering in the window.

“We can settle this LATER pup!” Edge growled as he strolled over to let the two vamps in. He missed the way Randy tensed, eyes flashing as his fangs began to push out of his mouth as he poised to take down the threat from within their own pack. In the end he dropped his head and closed his eyes sucking in deep shuddering breaths as he slowly began to regain control of the wolf.

“What’s with the Kid?” Hunter asked Edge softly as he and John strolled into the house. Edge glanced over at Randy’s slightly shuddering form and shrugged even as a small smirk crossed his face. John mere rolled his eyes as he walked over to Randy.

“Let’s go find Rey and see if he’s come up with a plan yet while we wait for David,” John suggested softly. Randy nodded and turned to lead John out of the room, leaving Hunter and Edge alone to talk amongst themselves.

“Stop here David…where they can’t see me coming,” Rayne’s voice was soft but the growing note of power in it had David pulling over before the house came into sight and shutting off the engine.

“A-Are you sure?” he asked softly, honestly torn between his deep seated worry over Rey and his concern for the love of his immortal life. Rayne nodded and smiled as she gently patted his hand but David’s concern grew as he noted it never reached her eyes, which were as cold and hard as emeralds.

“I’ll be fine Ken can’t hurt me,” she said coolly as she climbed out of the car. David watched with a sigh as she slipped stealthily into the woods, his frown increasing as he realized that some of her changes were already starting to occur. He quickly climbed out of the car and using his vampiric speed quickly made his way around the back of Rey’s house. Thank God he had already been invited inside once.

“I’m TELLING you Austin he KNOWS! We’ve GOT to do something!” Ken snapped as he paced restlessly back and forth. Steve sighed and ran a weary hand down his face as he glanced over to Benoit, who was glancing to the house with a look of worry on his face.

“Well what the FUCK ya want to do ya braying jackass? Just waltz in there and bare our throats and beg Mysterio to rip them out?!” Steve snapped. Ken opened his mouth to reply then froze at the sound of the voice behind him.

“No what you are GOING to do is pack your GI Joe wanna be asses BACK into that rusted out heap of scrap metal and get off this property before the cops are called,” Rayne’s voice was cold and Ken quickly whirled around to face her. His face paled as he took note of the minor yet noticeable changes in her and had a sinking feeling that if he didn’t move quickly it would be too late to rescue her from Bautista’s evil clutches. And judging by the look on Benoit’s face he was having the same thoughts about his own sister.

“Rayne…you’re not yourself…please…let us help you…help Tala,” Ken pleaded as he took a step towards the stranger that wore his sister’s face. For even though she looked like his sister and her voice SOUNDED like Rayne he knew at that moment, with Bautista’s power beginning to flow through her, she might as well be a complete stranger to him. Rayne smirked as she crossed her arms over her chest, her eyes seeming to grow even colder.

“Who said we NEED your help Ken? You OR your little buddies here? Did you EVER stop to think that MAYBE we WANT to be with Rey and David?” she whispered silkily. Kurt stepped forward and felt a chill shoot through him as she turned her ice cold gaze onto him. The power shining out of them made him wonder with growing sadness if it was too late to save her.

“David thank you for coming,” Rey said softly as he stood. Tala slowly glanced up from her glass and gave a faint smile. The smile quickly faded as she saw Edge walk in followed by Cena and she shivered. Rey’s eyes immediately returned to her as did David’s. The vampire frowned as he took note of her unusual pallor.

‘Rey did you…’ David’s voice trailed off as a faint blush, the first he had ever seen from the smaller man rose up in his bronzed cheeks.

‘I…I couldn’t help myself David. She’s the one destined to be my mate,’ he replied as he hurried over to a nearby cabinet. He opened the door and reached in, pulling out a blanket before turning and walking back over to Tala.

“Here baby let’s put this on you it is a bit chilly,” Rey murmured as he carefully tucked the blanket around Tala’s slender shaking form. He missed the way Randy’s eyes flashed and his jaw tensed at the tender scene before him before he quickly turned away. Tala slowly curled up on the couch as she allowed Rey to tug the blanket over her and closed her eyes. Maybe the sickening spinning of the room would stop if she rested her eyes for a bit. Once Rey was assured Tala was comfortable and had everything he needed he turned to face the waiting group of men, his eyes growing cold as the wolf within came to the forefront.

“Now…let’s go take care of some business.”

“Rayne…please you’re not yourself. Bautista has infected you with his evil,” Ken pleaded as he took a hesitant step towards his sister. Rayne immediately threw up her hand and Ken froze, stunned by the faint power he felt tingle across his skin at just that simple movement.

“Infected me? Please! You make it sound like he has rabies or something!” she snapped. Ken’s jaw clenched as he began to weary of trying to reason with her. She had always been a stubborn one.

“What he has Rayne is a HELL of a lot worse than rabies,” Chris said ominously. Rayne shifted her cold gaze to him and it was all he could do to hide the shiver he felt sliding down his spine. It was like Bautista was staring out of Rayne’s eyes.

“And you Chris? Exactly WHAT gives you the right to say who Tala can and can’t see? She told me about her one date with THAT ass,” Rayne purred silkily as she gestured to a fuming James. Chris dropped his eyes before she could read the secret in them and Rayne gave a satisfied nod before turning her attention back to Austin.

“Now I want you to take your Rambo playing buddies and get the HELL off this property before I call the cops myself,” she stated flatly. Before Austin could open his mouth to reply the sound of the front door opening caught their attention.

“You heard the lady Austin. Get the FUCK off my property!” Rey growled as he descended the porch, flanked by Edge and Randy. Behind him came David, John and Hunter, leaving the hunters glancing at each other uneasily. A temporary alliance forming between Mysterio and Bautista was DEFINITELY something they hadn’t expected! Ken swallowed hard and bravely took a step forward, tilting his chin up in defiance.

“Or what you mangy mutt you gonna give us fleas?” he smirked. Rey inhaled deeply, eyes flashing as he struggled to contain the wolf. Beside him Randy growled deeply, his sensual lips peeling away from his rapidly extending teeth. Rey placed a hand on his shoulder and an unspoken message passed between them. Randy slowly settled back, a disgusted look sliding onto his face.

“No he’s going to call the police and have you nut jobs all arrested for trespassing!” John snapped. Kurt glanced over to him and smirked.

“He can TRY but are you things so STUPID as to not realize that we KNOW people?” Kurt shot back. David’s cold hard gaze turned to him and Kurt had to fight the urge to shiver and take an involuntarily step back at the feeling of that barely controlled rage and power washing over him like a fiery tide.

“We know people too Angle…people that could easily make sure that there’s NO trace of you ever found. But we believe in taking care of our own…problems,” David replied in a voice so cold Kurt was surprised he didn’t get frostbite. Ken immediately turned his gaze to the man responsible for corrupting his innocent baby sister. He took a step towards him, intending to stake him on the spot. His eyes widened as he suddenly found himself frozen in place, unable to move any part of his body but his eyes. He glanced around and paled as she found Rayne staring at him, power blazing from her eyes.

“I WARNED you Ken! Now you WILL get the FUCK out of here before I do something I’m pretty sure I MIGHT end up regretting later!” she hissed. Rey’s eyes widened in shock as he quickly glanced over to David, stunned by the amount of power she had within her in just such a short time. Judging by the startled look on David’s face it had caught him completely by surprise as well.

James discreetly tugged at Chris’ arm, gesturing slightly to head around back. Chris gave a faint nod and the pair slowly slipped back into the trees. Once they were assured they were out of eyesight they took off around towards the back of the house. Come hell or high water they were going to save Chris’ sister!

Tala slowly opened her eyes and hesitantly looked around, not wanting to move too quickly. She was still feeling lightheaded and the shakes were starting to come again. She raised a trembling hand to her forehead and winced at the heat she felt radiating from it. She moaned softly as her body began to ache, and suddenly her clothing felt too constricting. She stood shakily and began to strip off her clothing, instinct driving her to rid herself of as much heat trapping coverings as possible. She sighed with relief as the chilly air wafted across her skin, cooling her slightly. She was unaware of the fact that a pair of blue eyes with a hint of a golden color in them watched her from the window. The unknown observer sat on her haunches, her black silky fur streaked with silver throughout it as she watched the young woman inside striving to make herself comfortable during the first stages of the change. She felt a kinship with the young woman, and wanted to be there to help her through the changes. Her slender snout dropped open in a wolfish version of a smirk as a mental image of the other reason she was here began to form in her mind. She would tame the wolf known as Edge when all was said and done.

Suddenly, the sound of people coming through the woods behind the house carried through the wind and reached her fur-tipped ears. Her eyes narrowed in fury at the uninvited intrusion and, uncaring of whether she exposed her presence before she was ready or not, threw back her head and howled a warning to the wolves in front. No way in hell was she going to allow the two men approaching the house cautiously a chance to take away the young woman before she got a chance to speak with her…not even if one of those intruders was of her own blood as well.

Rey froze at the sound of the unknown wolf’s cry before a white hot fury filled him as he realized that Storm and Benoit had disappeared during the confrontation. He whirled around, his body bending as the changes swept over him rapidly. Growling loudly, eyes flashing in fury at the danger to his mate, Rey disappeared into the woods, leaving the hunters turning to rush after them. They froze as they found themselves not only confronted by Randy and Edge, growling deeply as they blocked the path, snouts wrinkled back from their teeth in a warning snarl, but by Bautista and his men as well.

“BENOIT! STORM! MYSTERIO’S HEADING YOUR WAY!” Steve shouted, only to be knocked down by Edge. He quickly brought his hands up, barely managing to keep the wolf’s teeth just inches away from his throat. Kurt rushed over to help his brother and gave a startled cry as Randy’s teeth snagged his pants leg, holding him in place. Rayne and David turned as one, flanked on either side by Hunter and John and gazed down at Steve coldly.

“I suggest you take your men and leave this place and never return NOW!” David commanded as the power whipped around them, sending a rush of wind swirling around them. Leaves trembled, and all the small forest creatures in the area retreated into their homes for shelter…all except for one squirrel who sat perched in the nearest tree, watching the scene with an uncanny interest in his dark eyes. Edge’s eyes cut to the squirrel in a brief acknowledgement before returning back to Austin, his eyes darkening with the urge to rip the hunter’s throat out and get it over with. Only the fact that Mysterio hadn’t given the order was holding him back. As Steve stared his own possible death in the eyes he began to wonder if he was getting too old for this job. Was it even worth it anymore? A quick glance over at the young woman standing beside Bautista, watching with no emotion what so ever on her face, and the thought of Benoit’s sweet young sister was enough to keep him strong. But he knew when to quit and retreat. He nodded faintly and Edge slowly backed off, never taking his eyes off him. David nodded to Randy and Randy let go of Kurt, backing off with a low warning growl. Kurt rushed over and helped Steve up.

“Get in your damn truck and we’ll bring Benoit and Storm back,” Rayne commanded coldly. Steve and Kurt slowly shuffled backwards and as one unit Randy and Edge whirled around and disappeared into the woods, to help their leader. As they ran Edge found his thoughts turning to the unknown wolf he sensed. Who was she? And why did he have a feeling that his fate was going to be directly tied into hers?

By the time Rey reached the back of the house, he was shocked to find that Storm and Benoit had been backed up against a tree by the snarling form of a black and silver wolf. He paused briefly, wondering who she was. He pushed aside that question for later consideration as he quickly changed back and approached the two men. The unknown wolf whined softly and backed off slightly, dipping her head low in an instinctive gesture of obedience to the head of the pack. Rey nodded slightly, acknowledging the action before turning his gaze to the two interlopers. By all rights one of them should be dead. But the other…he could not touch as long as he had the protective power of his sister behind him…even if she didn’t know who he was.

“Leave this place…NOW!” he growled softly. James’ head tilted in defiance and Rey’s gaze sharpened as he prepared himself. But before he could Benoit grabbed Storm’s arm and dragged him slowly off into the woods, back towards the front of the house. The unknown female wolf glanced to Rey, as if asking for permission to follow them and Rey nodded. She quickly bounded after them and the sound of their hurried flight was music to his ears. As the sound faded, and the fainter sound of Austin’s truck peeling off down the gravel reached his ears Rey allowed a small puzzled frown to cross his face. Who was this unknown wolf? And what agenda did she have? He sighed. Yet another mystery for him to figure out. But first he needed to make sure his mate was ok. He turned and hurried into the house, never aware of the fact that a pair of demonic eyes that belonged to a midnight black crow watched before taking flight. Eric knew Vince would not be pleased by these turn of events.

Chapter Seventeen

“Hey baby are…” Rey’s voice trailed off as he walked into the living room and caught sight of Tala. She was laying on the couch, completely naked, a thin sheen of sweat covering her body. As his wide eyes stared he noticed that her skin seemed to be rippling even as a low sound, a part moan, part growl slipped from between her tightly clamped lips. He quickly rushed over and dropped to his knees, unaware of anything outside of the fact that the changes within Tala’s body were happening at an alarming rate. She was already showing signs of her first physical change, her nails lengthening even as he watched into claws and he knew if he gently pried her lips open he would find her teeth slowly lengthening into fangs as well. He trailed a hand softly over a sweaty arm and closed his eyes as he felt the prickly beginnings of fur trying to push out through her skin. Damn he hadn’t expected the changes to hit this fast!

Suddenly the sound of the front door opening and the sound of voices reached his ears. He quickly wrapped the nearby blanket around his semi-conscious mate and gathered her into his arms. He moved quickly towards the stairs and started up them…only to freeze at the sound of David’s voice in his mind.

‘The changes have begun?’ Rey sighed and dropped his head and nodded.

‘Y-Yeah…much faster than I had anticipated. I…I’ve never had anyone start this part of the change this quickly,’ he admitted as he slowly continued up the stairs. He heard David murmur something softly to Rayne before moving to walk up the stairs behind Rey. He said nothing more as he followed Rey to the master bedroom. He respectfully turned his gaze away until Rey had her situated in the bed and the covers pulled up over her before turning back…and swallowed hard as he caught sight of her. Rey was right the changes were occurring much more rapidly than expected. Either Rey had grown more powerful since the last time he had changed someone…or Tala had a bit of wolf already inside of her genes.

Rayne wandered into the living room and took a seat on the couch then suddenly frowned. She reached down and then faintly blushed as she pulled up some of Tala’s clothing from the floor. She hastily shoved it underneath a couch cushion as Randy and John walked into the room, followed a few seconds later by Hunter and Edge. Outside the window, crouched low so that she couldn’t be seen, the unknown wolf’s eyes fastened on Edge hungrily.

“Man did you see how fast they took off?” John chuckled as he headed straight for the bar. Randy smiled slightly but said nothing, his thoughts turned inward. He had hoped to see Tala but it appeared that Rey had sequestered her away somewhere. Typical alpha male behavior. Randy sighed softly and Edge smirked as he caught the sound. The kid had it bad for Tala.

“Hey pup why don’t you go see if Rey wants us to order some food? I’m sure the ladies are hungry,” Edge said with a grin. Randy whirled to face him, eyes glittering and Edge quickly raised his hands. Randy muttered a curse under his breath and ran a hand through his hair as he slowly relaxed.

“That’s not a bad idea old timer,” he shot back. Edge’s smile faltered and his eyes narrowed but a sharp jab from Hunter quickly settled him down. Randy closed his eyes and concentrated…then paled as he suddenly rushed from the room. He could feel Rey’s near panic. Something was wrong with Tala.

“Rey…have you done any checks on her?” David’s voice was quiet as they watched the young woman on the bed toss and turn as her body fought against the change. Rey sat on the edge of the bed, occasionally wiping the sweat from Tala’s forehead with a cool cloth and quickly moving to avoid the involuntary swipes her half clawed hand took at him. Rey sighed softly.

“No…I…failed to do that. My instincts…” Rey’s voice trailed off as Tala’s back suddenly arched rather violently before she collapsed back on the bed. Immediately Rey leapt to his feet as Tala stilled and grew quiet. Thank God it appeared that maybe her body had managed to fight off the change…for now. He needed to tell her the truth before the next time…because he might not be so lucky.

“It looks like her human side has won out…for now,” David said quietly. Rey nodded as he sat on the edge of the bed and took her hand in his, relieved to note that her claws were receding back into normal fingernails. He leaned over and pressed a light kiss to her forehead, smiling as she turned towards him, mumbling something too soft for even his keen wolf hearing to make out.

“David…can you…” Rey’s voice trailed off as the bedroom door was suddenly flung open. He leapt to his feet with a growl as he turned to face the threat to his mate.

“What the hell is wrong with Tala?” Randy growled.

Rayne leaned back on the couch and closed her eyes, suddenly feeling nauseous. Outside the window, the unknown wolf’s eyes narrowed as she studied the suddenly too pale young woman on the couch. Apparently her body was starting to react to Bautista’s powerful blood. A sudden cracking noise from behind her caught her off guard and she let out a startled yelp as a hand suddenly closed gently yet firmly around the fur on the back of her neck. She froze as her unknown attacker’s scent reached her nose. It appeared she would be coming into contact with the people inside of the house a lot sooner than planned.

“Randall what the HELL do you think you’re doing?” Rey growled as he stalked across the room to go nose to nose with his second in command. Randy glanced to the bed, where Tala was now resting comfortably, then back to Rey. Neither man noticed David quickly and quietly step forward, prepared to break them up if they came to blows.

“I originally came to see if you and David and Tala were hungry. But now I DEMAND to know what the hell is going on!” Randy growled as he stared defiantly into Rey’s eyes. Rey felt his grip on his temper slip a notch as he restrained the wolf. Here lately the Kid had gotten too big for his britches. It was about time to remind him just who the alpha male was around here.

“What gives you the right to demand ANY information about MY mate Randall?” Rey growled as his eyes lightened. Randy’s own eyes changed as the wolf crept closer, wanting nothing more than to assert its dominance and claim the pretty young redhead on the bed for his own. Before things could go any further David stepped between the pair.

“Rey I think you should attend to Tala. She’s going to be feeling pretty rough when she wakes up. As for YOU Orton…if you can not remember your place within your pack I suggest you leave,” David said coolly as he glanced from one to the other. Randy inhaled sharply as Rey shot David a grateful look before deliberately turning his back on Randy, the ultimate insult. Randy’s fists clenched with the need to change but he fought it off.

“You need to keep your fucking nose out of pack business Bautista!” Randy snarled. David merely arched a cool eyebrow, unfazed by the pup’s blustering. He had pretty much been around Randy since Rey had found him so he was used to his temper tantrums by now. Randy’s eyes grew even colder. Before he could snarl out another response the sound of Tala’s faint yet steady voice reached his ears.

“S-Someone w-want to tell me where I am and w-why I’m n-naked?”

John glanced over and saw that Rayne had suddenly paled. He immediately rushed over to her side and took a seat next to her.

“Rayne what’s wrong?” he asked quietly as he touched her hand. Rayne swallowed past the rapidly growing dryness in her throat as she turned her head to face John.

“I t-think…” was all she managed before suddenly collapsing back against the couch, her eyes rolling back in her head. Immediately John shot to his feet, scooping Rayne up in his arms as he hurried towards the stairs. He ignored the sight of Edge dragging in an unfamiliar wolf as he bounded up the stairs. His only concern at that moment was getting Rayne comfortable.

‘John? What is happening?’ David’s powerful voice suddenly cut sharply through his mind and John flinched slightly.

‘I don’t know David. I looked over and Rayne had paled. I asked her what was wrong and she passed out before she could answer,’ he replied as he bounded up the stairs. Immediately he heard the sounds of David speaking to Rey from the master bedroom before he suddenly appeared, his face lined with worry.

“Give her to me. I’ll take her to the next room,” David commanded softly as she stretched out his arms. John paused, his arms tightening briefly on the unconscious young woman as he gazed steadily into David’s eyes. David’s lips narrowed and pressed together in a thin angry line at John’s hesitation…and the spark of rebellion he could see brewing in the younger man’s blue eyes. It appeared that his second in command and Randy had something in common…both wanted their leader’s mates.

Edge allowed the struggling wolf free once he had closed the front door and watched as it scrambled into the living room. He followed a bit slower, anticipation building within deep inside of him. He strolled casually into the living room and stopped in shock at the sight of the breathtaking female that was standing in the middle of the living room, waiting to confront him.

She stood at about five feet five inches tall, and had shoulder length blue-black colored hair with platinum streaks in it that he longed to bury his fingers in. She had deep green eyes that were sparkling with anger and something else he couldn’t quite put his finger on. He slowly ran his gaze over her body, over the nicely proportioned chest, down to the slender waist, to the slender legs that he suddenly had a vision of being wrapped around his waist as he plunged deep into her body. He shook his head slightly before returning his gaze to her face, lingering on her sensual full lips that begged to be kissed before slowly moving back up to her eyes.

“Who the hell are you and why are you spying on us?” what was meant to come out as a harshly growled question came out instead in a huskier than usual voice and he grimaced slightly. Not the best way to intimidate someone. The stranger smirked as she folded her arms over her chest. She ignored the blonde haired vampire in the room, Hunter she corrected herself, and focused on Edge.

“I think you only need the answer to one of those questions right now,” she said in a soft silky voice that sent a wave of desire crashing through Edge. Hunter snickered softly at the look on Edge’s face. It appeared that this stranger might be just the one to tame this particular wolf. Edge licked his lips as he tamed down his body’s response.

“And which question are you going to be so generous as to answer?” he sneered. The unknown female laughed.

“There’s the ego I was waiting on. I’ll grant you the privilege of knowing my name. It’s Mia…Mia DeAngelo. You would do good to remember the name of your future mate,” she smirked. Once again Edge was shocked speechless. Who the HELL did she think she was? Hunter again roared with laughter, his plans for assuming leadership of his family with Edge’s help slowly receding into the background of his mind. Right now he was enjoying seeing the high and mighty Edge being brought down to his belly by this female. His only concern was about the question she didn’t answer. Why HAD she been spying on them? Only time would apparently reveal her true motivations. For now he was just going to alternate between keeping an eye on her to make sure she didn’t do anything untoward to the current heads of the families and laughing at Edge’s attempts to best her at a game that he wasn’t quite used to losing at.

Chapter Eighteen

“R-Rey? W-What’s going on?” Tala whispered as she tried to focus her eyes on him and Randy. Rey growled a soft warning before turning and hurrying over to the bed, ignoring Randy’s own low growl. There would be plenty of time to remind Randy who the leader of the pack was later.

“What’s the last thing you remember baby?” he asked softly as he took one of her still damp hands in his. He tensed slightly as he saw Randy moving towards the other side of the bed and forced himself to relax. Right now Tala was more important. Tala licked her dry lips before speaking.

“I…I r-remember you h-heading outside t-to take care of s-something…t-then I started feeling h-hot…i-itchy…” she whispered. Randy’s eyes widened as he listened and he glared hard at Rey. He had started the transformation without telling her! Rey’s eyes cut to Randy’s and narrowed in a silent warning.

“Maybe you picked up a bug or something baby,” he said softly as he pressed the back of his hand to her forehead. Thankfully her skin was normal to the touch, assuring him that her human side had won out temporarily. Randy shook his head and muttered something under his breath, drawing another warning glare from Rey.

“M-Maybe,” she whispered as she closed her eyes wearily. She knew one thing, whatever it was that had hit her had hit hard…and didn’t feel as if it would be gone for long. She quickly fell into an exhausted doze, leaving Rey to glare at Randy and wonder how far he could send the pup off on patrol without causing another fight. The last thing he needed was Randy spilling out everything to Tala before he had a chance to talk to her.

“John…give her to me…NOW!” David growled as he held his arms out to take Rayne. John merely tightened his hold on her and turned, gently nudging the bedroom door to his left open and hurrying into the room. David swore viciously as he followed, knowing that he would have to remind John of just who was in charge…and who exactly was to be Rayne’s mate. He watched, jaw clenched in irritation, rapidly extending fangs scraping against his lower lip and drawing blood as John gently laid Rayne down on the bed and covered her up. When John paused to run a soft hand down Rayne’s pale cheek David snapped. He stalked over and grabbed his second in command and firmly shoved him away. John stumbled back, his eyes beginning to glow in anger as his own fangs extended in anticipation of the fight to come.

“Jealous David? Worried that she might actually choose ME over YOU?” he snarled. David inhaled deeply, his eyes flashing fire as he stepped closer.

“John I suggest you get the hell out of this room and stay out of my sight for the rest of the night!” he snarled, his fangs flashing menacingly. John merely smirked, crossing his arms over his chest.

“David you may be the head of this family and as such I may have to listen to you on matters relating to the family…but when it comes to choosing a mate I do NOT need your permission for that!” he shot back. David’s response about floored him.

“She already has a mate Cena…why do you think she is changing? We mated last night…she is MY mate,” David said with a triumphant smile. John’s face paled as he quickly scanned David’s blatantly open memories and saw the truth for himself. With a hostile glare that promised that things weren’t over John turn and stalked out of the room, leaving David alone with the unconscious Rayne. David let out a deep exhalation of breath before turning and walking over to the bed. As he sat next to Rayne and took her hand in his he only hoped she wouldn’t be too upset with him…when he told her what he had done.

Edge could only continue to stare in shock at Mia after her bold statement, for once in his long life rendered speechless. He was aware of Hunter’s highly amused eyes watching his reaction but couldn’t seem to take his eyes off of Mia’s slender form. Who the HELL did she think she was?

“E-Excuse me?” he finally managed to spit out through his suddenly dry lips. Mia’s smirk grew bigger as she strolled casually over to the couch and took a seat.

“You heard me Edge. If not ask Helmsley over there…or better yet ask your squirrel friend. He’s seen me around often enough,” she drawled as she leaned back against the couch cushions. Edge’s eyes immediately darted to the window, where the squirrel sat on a branch outside the window gazing in. After a moment of silence Edge broke the strange communication he had been having with the animal and turned his attention back to the strange woman.

“I’ve sensed your presence now for some time. WHO exactly are you and why did you choose to reveal yourself NOW?” he growled. Mia merely smirked.

“Now…if I told you ALL of my secrets then it would take the fun out of you getting to know me wouldn’t it?” she purred. Then to Edge’s further annoyance she closed her eyes and seemed to instantly drop off to sleep, leaving him to pace the room fuming. Hunter laughed as he took a seat in a nearby chair. This was turning out to be one hell of an eventful day!

“DAMN IT!” Ken’s loud curse echoed throughout the building as the hunters trudged back inside. He threw his bag angrily across the room and turned, fist drawn back to punch the wall. Kurt quickly grabbed his wrist, preventing him from shattering his hand, while James glanced in concern over at the more withdrawn than usual Chris.

“Cool your jets Kennedy I’ll get us some help and we’ll save your sister and Benoit’s,” Steve drawled as he strolled towards the refrigerator. He reached inside and pulled out a beer, popping the tab and taking a long swallow before turning back and facing his crew.

“All right…it’s obvious that Bautista has begun the transformation on Rayne…but she can still be saved,” Steve said quickly as he noted Kennedy’s violent reaction. “The question is has Mysterio already started the change on Tala? Or is he waiting until Halloween night?” he finished. Chris frowned slightly. That was a good point.

“Who CARES? What’s important is that we get them away from those freaks!” Ken snarled. Kurt muttered something under his breath as James shot Ken an annoyed look.

“I care Kennedy that’s my sister that’s with Mysterio. And YES I know YOUR sister is with Bautista but DAMN it she KNOWS you are her brother! Tala has NO fucking IDEA who I AM!” Chris snapped, his eyes sparking with an unusual fire. Ken ran a hand through his hair and sighed, knowing Chris was right.

“Sorry Chris,” he sighed softly. Chris nodded abruptly and turned away as he ran a hand through his hair. Steve cleared his throat to bring their attention back to him.

“I think it’s time we called in some help. It’s obvious Mysterio and Bautista have formed some sort of temporary alliance. Separately they’re hard enough to take care of but with their powers combined…” Steve’s voice trailed off uncharacteristically, letting the impression sink in deep into every man in the room. Any time Steve sounded less than commanding was usually a sign that things were worse than they had thought. They watched as he spun on his heel and rapidly made his way to his office. The time to call in a few favors from some of the other groups had arrived.

The sound of Rayne’s piercing scream cut through the house, startling everyone. In Rey’s room Tala quickly sat up and moaned as the room danced wildly around her. Immediately Rey wrapped an arm around her shoulders, steadying her.

“Easy baby take it slow,” he said softly, ignoring Randy’s glare. Tala licked her dry lips before speaking.

“T-That w-was R-Rayne…I n-need t-to…” her voice trailed off weakly as shivers began to wrack her body again. Rey gently pressed her back down into the bed, pulling the covers up tighter around her even as Randy hurried to start a fire in the bedroom fireplace.

“Rayne will be fine David is with her,” Rey said in a soft and soothing voice. Randy had finished building the fire and stood, his fists loosely clenched.

‘This isn’t right Rey!’ he growled as he watched Tala’s body trying to fight off the changes taking place within. He began to pace the floor and Rey glared at him, longing for the days when he had been young enough for Rey to just turn over his knee and spank.

“W-What’s w-wrong w-with her?” Tala whispered between her chattering teeth. Rayne’s screams had quieted down some but Tala could still hear her agonized moans.

“She wasn’t feeling well earlier maybe she caught the same bug as you,” Rey said quietly. Randy snorted derisively.

“Not bloody likely,” he snarled under his breath.

‘Shut the FUCK up Randall or get the HELL out of here!’ Rey growled. Randy glared, fists clenching.

‘MAKE me Rey! This shit isn’t right and you know it!’ he snapped back. Rey’s jaw clenched as it tingled, signaling the end of his patience with Randy. Before he could speak again though Rayne’s screams suddenly cut off, leaving an uneasy silence in the air. It was apparent the first hurdle of Rayne’s transformation was over.

David continued to hold Rayne’s hand gently even as she quickly passed into the resting state as her body continued to undergo the changes his blood had began. John paced the room, glaring towards David every now and then but not bothering to speak. He knew that this was a crucial stage in Rayne’s transformation. If she didn’t get through it…he quickly shoved that thought away as his pace quickened. She would make it she was strong.

“Sit down Cena you’re making me nervous,” David said softly, never taking his eyes off of Rayne’s pale face. He could almost see his blood working, repairing years of damage that everyday life had brought to her system. He watched as the faint signs of aging, the small lines around her eyes, the almost microscopic wrinkles slowly faded away. Her skin smoothed out to resemble that of a teenager, clean and unblemished by time or disease. He watched the faintest streaks of grey that had been scattered throughout her dark hair slowly fade away, leaving her hair looking jet black and feeling as luxurious as the finest silk. John glared harder at David as he walked over and deliberately took a seat on the other side of the bed. He focused his eyes on Rayne, ignoring David’s warning hiss. He knew one thing…he wanted Rayne for his mate. And he would have her no matter what the cost.

“WHAT?” McMahon’s roar echoed throughout the office floor, bringing everyone outside of his office to a standstill. Eyes quickly flew to watches or clocks, as if checking to see if it was time to go home yet and more than a few people suddenly decided they needed to heed the call of nature. All knew one thing...when McMahon’s voice raised like that someone was in major trouble.

Inside the office Bischoff almost cowered down in his chair as Vince prowled the office, steam almost pouring from his ears. Given who he was, it wouldn’t have shocked Bischoff at all if steam literally HAD poured out from his ears. Given the fire he saw blazing in Vince’s black dead eyes it might still happen yet.

“M-Mysterio and B-Bautista have come to s-some sort of temporary alliance,” he finally managed to squeak out again. He immediately ducked as the letter opener that had been sitting on the edge of Vince’s desk went sailing through the air, to firmly dig itself into one of the office walls.

“THEY CAN’T find out their connection! We HAVE to get them apart!” Vince growled as he prowled the office. Apparently the two young women weren’t enough of a distraction. It was time to give the hunters a little more…help. Without a further word Vince disappeared, leaving a thoroughly relived Bischoff alone in the office.

Kurt allowed his apartment door to slam closed wearily behind him. He chucked his bag onto a chair before heading for the bathroom, peeling off his shirt. He was tired, and pissed. The day definitely had not gone as expected. He quickly showered, trying to keep his thoughts away from the failure of the day. He stepped out of the shower and headed for the bedroom, towel around his waist. The sound of the unfamiliar male voice behind him stopped him dead in his tracks.

“Mr. Angle I do believe I can…help you."

Chapter Nineteen

Rayne’s eyes slowly fluttered open and she let out a soft moan as the room swam briefly before her suddenly too sharp gaze. David quickly leaned forward, placing a tender kiss on her cheek, ignoring John’s low hiss of anger.

“Hey baby how are you feeling?” he asked softly as his eyes slowly ran over her, taking note of all the changes his blood had had on her so far. Rayne licked her too dry lips and John immediately reached out and grabbing a glass of water that had been sitting on the nightstand nearby.

“Hold on sweetheart,” he said softly. Ignoring David’s low threatening growl John wrapped an arm around Rayne’s slender shoulders and helped her sit up slightly, holding the glass to her lips. Rayne took a few careful sips before turning her head away. John smiled as he helped her lay back and set the glass back down on the nightstand, taking her other free hand in his.

“W-What h-happened?” she whispered as she attempted to focus her eyes. David ran a gentle hand down her cheek and Rayne turned instinctively into his touch.

“You…”

“Must have caught a bug,” David said smoothly as he shot John a dark look. John’s jaw tightened in irritation but he said nothing. Rayne nodded slightly.

“P-Probably g-got it from T-Tala,” she whispered with a faint laugh. John looked away.

“I highly doubt that,” he muttered, unaware that Rayne’s hearing had sharpened and she caught his muttered words.

“W-Why do you s-say that?” she asked John softly. John’s eyes widened slightly and David’s jaw clenched in anger. Damn John’s mouth!

“All he meant by that baby was that you and Tala haven’t been around each other for a few days and she just barely caught whatever it is she has herself,” David said quickly, his eyes flashing fire as he glared heatedly at John. John merely gazed back at him, his blue eyes cold as ice but he did nothing to counteract David’s hasty explanation. Rayne nodded and her eyes slowly fluttered closed as David’s blood continued to work on her, forcing her into a relaxing healing sleep. Once David was assured she was out for awhile he raised his head and glared at John.

“Get out,” he ordered coldly. “I’ll deal with you later.” John merely smirked as he settled back against the headboard of the bed. If David wanted him out he would have to physically throw him out!

Tala’s eyes slowly fluttered open again and she frowned slightly as she found herself gazing up at an unfamiliar ceiling. This wasn’t her bedroom…where the hell was she? She shifted underneath the smooth cool covers and frowned even more as she realized she was naked. She slowly relaxed as bits and pieces of earlier came back to her. She sat up slightly, wincing at the unfamiliar achiness that was radiating from every bone in her body. Damn it felt like she had put herself though one hell of a workout!

“Easy baby,” the sound of Rey’s soft voice caught her attention and she slowly turned her head, relaxing as she found him sitting beside the bed, his light blue eyes watching her with some concern.

“R-Rey?” her voice was weak as she slowly leaned back against the headboard, sweat immediately beading on her too pale forehead from the effort of sitting up. She weakly tugged at the covers and sighed softly as Rey quickly drew them up around her, tucking the ends in such a way that there was no danger of them slipping down off of her bare breasts.

“How are you feeling?” Randy’s voice came from the other side of the bed and Tala turned her head, smiling slightly as she spotted him.

“A little better actually,” she said softly. Randy smiled and Rey let an almost inaudible growl rumble forth from his throat as his eyes flashed angrily. Randy’s eyes rose and met Rey’s and the challenge gleaming in their deep blue depths had Rey’s fingers itching to turn the kid over his knee and tan his hide as he had used to while raising him.

“Are you thirsty?” Rey asked softly, his eyes flashing a promise of discipline at Randy before softening as he gazed into Tala’s. Tala smiled slightly and nodded and Rey immediately grabbed the water beside the bed. He gently held it to her lips, helping to steady her slightly shaky hand as she drank until she turned her face away. He set the glass back down and took her chilled hand in his, lacing his fingers carefully with hers. Tala sighed softly.

“I-I’m s-sorry R-Rey,” she whispered softly as she shivered. Randy immediately leapt up and hurried over to the fireplace, building the fire higher. Rey nodded approvingly at Randy before returning his attention to Tala.

“For what baby?” he asked softly, puzzled. Tala slowly turned her head towards him and Rey could see that the change was still hovering close to the surface.

“F-For g-getting s-sick…f-for b-being such a b-burden,” she whispered as her teeth began to chatter. Immediately Randy stood and hurried over to the closet, pulling out an extra blanket. He shook it out and walked over, draping it over Tala and tucking it around her, his fingers lingering briefly on her skin. Tala inhaled softly and Rey’s eyes narrowed as a faint snarl etched itself on his face. Randy smiled at Tala before taking his seat back on the bed. Rey muttered a soft curse before softening his gaze and returning it to Tala’s as he gently took one of her chilled hands in his.

“You’re not a burden baby…you can’t help getting sick,” he said softly as he gazed into her eyes. On the other side of the bed Randy let out a soft snort and Rey’s eyes cut to him, darkening with annoyance as the wolf within flashed out, demanding obedience. Instinctively Randy’s eyes began to lower as his own wolf responded to the unspoken command before he suddenly straightened and met Rey’s eyes with his own, a discreet challenge to Rey’s authority that he couldn’t let go unpunished for long. Rey let out a low inaudible growl and Randy smirked as he leaned back against the headboard. As much as he loved Rey like a father and respected him for raising him he’d be damned if he let him have Tala for his mate without a fight!

Rayne slowly opened her eyes sometime later, a bit unsure as to what exactly woke her. She raised her head slightly and glanced around; frowning slightly as she saw that she was alone. Where had David and John gone? She slowly sat up, pausing for a moment as the room spun briefly before sliding from the bed. She frowned as an unfamiliar energy began to course through her veins, arousing a hunger unlike anything she had ever felt before.

“D-David? John?” she called out softly, wincing as the sound of her voice seemed to echo loudly throughout the large and empty room. She frowned even more as she took note of the fact that at some point in time David must have moved her from Rey’s house back to his, as she was in his bedroom. She headed slowly for the door and opened it…and jumped back with a gasp as she came face to face with Ken.

“K-KEN! GOD you scared the FUCK out of me!” she hissed as she raised a hand to her chest. Ken didn’t speak, merely gazing at her with eyes that were filled with a mixture of anger, sorry and regret as he took a few careful steps towards her. Rayne frowned as she stepped back, fear beginning to slither through her at the way he was acting. She heard a slightly rustling and quickly whirled around, her face paling and eyes widening as Kurt stepped out of the shadows from behind her, his face as cold and emotionless as Ken’s was. She could hear murmurs from the suddenly eerie shadows of the room and she felt herself tearing up. Where was David? John? Why weren’t they there to protect her like they said they would?

“Kill her…kill her….kill her…” the eerily hissed chant seemed to come from nowhere until it filled the room, echoing throughout the vast empty space and curling around Rayne like a noose, almost paralyzing her with fear. Her eyes darted rapidly from Kurt to Ken, the tears slowly trickling down her cheeks as she saw for the first time, the weapons in their hands.

“K-Ken w-what a-are you doing with that?” she whimpered as she continued to slowly back away from him. She suddenly stumbled on something and fell back onto her ass and gazed down. Her eyes widened and her mouth opened in a silent scream as she saw the head of the dark auburn furred wolf with Tala’s glazed eyes gazing at her from her feet. She hastily scrambled away and her back met the wall as she watched Ken casually kick the head aside, her heart breaking as she watched her best friend’s head roll off into the shadows and cringed as he and Kurt began to lean over her. She could only watch helplessly as they raised their stakes…and she sat up in the bed quickly, the sound of her own shrill terrified screams echoing throughout the bedroom and the house, filling everyone with terror.

“What the FUCK!” Randy cried out as he leapt off the bed and dashed for the door. Rey immediately pulled Tala into his arms as she cried out, her whole body shaking violently in terror as her best friend’s cries continued to ring throughout the house. Downstairs, Mia immediately awoke and made a dash for the stairs, closely followed by a pale Hunter and Edge. In the bedroom, David had quickly drawn Rayne into his arms and was gently rocking her as he attempted to calm her, while John prowled around the room, his fists clenched as he gazed around wildly for the source of Rayne’s terror.

“What the FUCKING HELL was THAT David? I have NEVER felt that kind of power before!” John hissed, his blue eyes taking on a reddish tint as his vampiric nature began to come through in his utter helplessness and rage. David shook his head, his own eyes blazing with red fire as he crooned softly to Rayne. Rayne had immediately turned and buried her face in his neck as powerful sobs shook her slender body.

“I don’t know John. You felt it? I, even with all of my power, could not break into the other’s control of her dreams to stop them,” he hissed as he ran a soothing hand through Rayne’s hair. John nodded as the nightmarish images of the dream that had been projected into Rayne’s sleeping vulnerable mind again appeared before his eyes. He and David had rushed forward from the balcony when they had seen Rayne discover Tala’s head but had been unable to penetrate the dark demonic shielding covering the doorways of her dreams. They could only stand there helplessly and watch as Ken and Kurt had bent over to stake Rayne until her own terrified shrieks had managed to pierce through the veil and awaken her.

“David? Is everything ok in here?” Randy asked anxiously as he burst through the door. John could see that he was on the verge of changing, ready to combat whatever threat that had caused Rayne to let forth such horrifying screams. His eyes narrowed as he caught sight of the unknown female crowding the doorway behind Randy, with Edge keeping a close watchful eye on her as Hunter shouldered past Randy and into the room.

“David?” he asked softly. Rayne’s trembling finally began to subside and she hastily wiped at the tears that had slid down her cheeks in her fear before finally pulling away from David. When she spoke though her voice was still shaky from the lingering terror and shame would not allow her to meet anyone’s eyes.

“It was just a nightmare…b-brought o-on by whatever t-this bug is I caught. I’m r-really sorry to have scared everyone,” she whispered. Hunter’s eyebrows flew up as his startled gaze met David’s. A look passed between them and Hunter turned away, his jaw clenched. David had started the Turning…and Rayne had no clue what was happening to her.

“It’s ok baby…I’m sure Rayne is fine,” Rey crooned softly as he continued to rock the still trembling redhead in his arms gently. Tala clung to him, her face nestled in his neck as Rayne’s screams continued to echo in her ears. GOD what was happening to her friend? To her?

“S-She s-sounded s-so scared R-Rey…s-so…” her voice trailed off weakly. There were no words to describe the untold emotion that had filled Rayne’s cries. Rey kissed the top of her hair softly.

“I know baby…sometimes some nightmares can have that effect on you,” he said quietly as he stroked his hand through her red locks. Slowly Tala’s trembling began to subside and she slowly relaxed against him as his touch began to soothe her.

“Y-Yeah some of them can b-be pretty b-bad,” she said as she squirmed slightly. Rey frowned as he loosened his hold on her.

“You ok baby?” he asked softly, suddenly alert as his senses picked up the faintest change in her scent. The change was preparing for another attempt at asserting itself on her. The question though was what form would it take this time?

“J-Just a bit itchy,” she said as she scratched absently at her lower calf muscle. Rey eased her back against the pillows and, after a quick glance back to make sure Randall wasn’t returning yet, turned the covers down lower and took a quick look. He sighed softly as he spotted the first tell tale signs of her fur trying to poke through her skin. He heard Tala inhale softly and quickly glanced up to find her gazing at her legs, a faint blush staining her creamy cheeks.

“I t-though I had shaved,” she said softly, unable to meet Rey’s eyes. GOD how embarrassing was today going to get? First she gets sick and peels her clothing off in front of Rey and god knows who else and now she has Rey staring at her Sasquatch looking legs! Rey bit back a soft chuckle as her worried thoughts transmitted to his mind and he quickly covered her back up.

“It’s ok baby I’m sure you did sometimes things…happen that cause our bodies to react…differently than the way we expect them to,” he said as he ran his hand down her arm. He was relieved to feel nothing but the smooth satiny skin of her flesh, meaning that the change was confining itself to her lower limbs for the moment. “How about a hot bath? Maybe that’ll help the itching,” he said suddenly. Tala nodded. Right now a hot bath would be heaven! As Rey placed a soft kiss on her lips and turned towards the bedroom he sent a thought to David.

‘What the HELL was that David?’ David’s reply caused him to stop short in the doorway to the bathroom and an icy finger of fear to slither down his spine.

‘Someone had control of Rayne’s mind…someone more powerful than us. We’re in deep trouble Rey.’
