In Him Was Life

In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
John 1:4

A few nights ago we had a summer storm and lost power
for a couple of hours. Wow! Was it dark! So dark that
I hit my leg twice trying to find a candle and a match.

After lighting a single taper I could move around in
the room without bumping my shin. I could also move from
room-to-room as long as I took the candle with me.
As I sat and watched the flickering candle I thought
of the Words of Jesus when He said,
"Ye are the light of the world." (Matthew 5:14)

Have you ever given thought to the fact that light always
dispels darkness? No matter how small the light, it
illuminates the area around it. Darkness cannot
overtake light. Light always triumphs!

Try an experiment. Take a small birthday candle and light it.
Take it to the darkest spot in your home or yard. No matter
how dark it may be, the light will dispel some darkness.

If you and I are born-again into the family of God,
then we are His lights. Are you the only Christian in
your home? in your workplace? on the team? etc. Then your
light has the greatest opportunity to illuminate the way.

As the rain stopped, we moved out to the patio to enjoy
the cool damp breeze, I took my trusted candle with me.
Occasionally the wind would cause the flame to flicker
and I immediately cupped my hand around it to protect
it and keep the flame glowing. Not unlike our Christian
walk at all. We have to guard and protect our spiritual
lights through faith, prayer, Bible reading, service to
others, and submission to His will. I'm sure there's many
times God cups His loving hands around us and protects us
from the attacks of the enemy. Even in our trials, He
is nearby, watching and protecting, urging us on, and
stopping the battle when it becomes too fierce.

Remember President Bush's Inaugural address in which he said,
" I have spoken of a thousand points of light, of all the
community organizations that are spread like stars throughout
the Nation, doing good." Now picture thousands of single candles
lighting the darkness---thousands of Christians living the Gospel
and pointing lost man to God. "Let your light so shine before
men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father
which is in heaven." (Matthew 5:16) You may be the only Bible
some people read. Some say "bloom where you're planted."
But God says, set your candle on a candlestick and it will
give light unto all who are in the house. (Matthew 5:15)

This little light of mine,
I'm going to let it shine
This little light of mine,
I'm going to let it shine
This little light of mine,
I'm going to let it shine
Let it shine,
Let it shine,
Let it shine.
