Masariku Daily Report 1 - Provided By Masariku Network Ambon
Friday 1st Desember 2000

NOT MUCH IS LEFT

Life of the Ambonese people both Christians and Muslims that was based on brotherhood vow of pela-gandong seems to have disappeared without a trace. This is a bitter history they left for the future generation. This story ends with the chasing of the Christians out of Wayame village after they lived side by side for centuries. Wayame village was the last one of the villages whose people were Muslims and Christians even after the violence broke up.

There was an attempt to attack the Christians in the village on Sunday, 26th November at 1 am, which was done by the military and the Muslims. The Christians villagers who were woken up by three bombs went straight to the shore and were taken on a speed boat at the early hours of the morning. Following their escape, was the sound of explosions and a scene of houses in flames. The speed boat that was going to cross the bay to Gudang Arang was stopped by a navy patrol ship. At 3.00 am, a military troop from B 733 was sent to take control of the situation.

At 8.00 am a minister from Wayame, Rev. Sahalessy asked the villagers to return to Wayame because it was reported that the military had the situation under control and it was save for them to return.

Prior to the event on Friday, on 29th November, the Muslim villagers have made a declaration that the Christians should be leaving the village by the 8th December. When this report was written there was a meeting between the Muslim and Christian leaders from Wayame.

Forced Coversion in Maluku
(REPORT FROM DAILY TELEGRAF, MANADO - Satuday, 25 November 2000)

Ambon, Telegraf - Until Friday 24th November the shooting continued in Maluku and the situation in Ambon was still tense. Along with that in the Seram island, there has been an operation of Christian cleansing by forcing the Christians to convert into Muslims.

This forced conversion has been going on in the island of Seram in the past six months and has caused more than 1000 Christians to deny their faith and convert to Islam or facing death.

Meanwhile, until yesterday (24/11) the shooting continued in the city of Ambon, causing at least one injured by the name of Notje Rafral while travelling on a minibus.

The action of forcing Christians to convert into Islam has been done on three islands, namely the islands of Buru, Seram and Bacan. "In all three islands the total numbers of conversion has reached 40,000 people, reported the head of the church legal representativ, Mr. Semmy Weileruny last night. This problem has been reported to the Communion of Churches in Indonesia and the World Council of Churches, however there has not been any concrete step to solve the problem.

This is clearly an act of human right abuse because it is done by force and those who refuse to convert are facing threats and violence. Those who refused and were able to leave their homes and take refuge in the forests. There is an effort to evacuate more Christians from the trouble areas to safety, this is done by the church ministers in the Seram island.
