ON DON IMUS
THE SOUND OF SILENCE

I have been deliberately silent about Don Imus’ free fall from neocon graces. My silence has prompted hate mail from those who erroneously assumed that my silence was consent for the antics of a fellow talk radio personality. It was never consent. Correction: It was protest.

I protested the selective hypocrisies of those black men who admirably and righteously attacked Imus for his rabidly racist and sexist slurs against sister athletes at Rutgers. Now, I end that protest and break that silence herein. I do so only because of the deafening volume of the potential fallout of Imus’ welcome and belated firing. I do so because I am unable to be silent anymore.

As a public intellectual and a talk show host, I am keenly aware of the contagion of censorship. Imus has been deservedly silenced! But, who will be next? Who will decide how they are equally deserving?

As a sane intellectual talk host, I choose to avoid the blatant vulgar attacks that have been the foundation of Imus’ media career. Droves of Imus clones, like Rush Limbaugh, “Dr.” Laura, Michael Savage, Sean Hannity, Neal Boortz, and countless other copycat neocon gas bags (even some in blackface like Larry Elder and Ken Hamblin), chant daily mantras nationwide that are far more racist and sexist than what Imus was foolish enough to utter on air.

The sisters at Rutgers are in no way unique victims of radio shock jocks. They are indeed unique victors. They are very fortunate to have garnered many allies who made enough noise to finally silence Imus. Constantly, Imus has called black male athletes “apes” and “gorillas” on air. Why no outcry then?

What about all the Imus clones on the air all over Amerikkka? Will they be slain next? Or, will those warriors who felled Imus now simply resume their selective silences as they listen to misogynist rap music and watch lewd videos on BET? The ongoing and glaring hypocrisy of allowing black men to produce lyrics, videos, and films that demean and degrade black women daily is FAR louder than the outcry that silenced Imus.

I actually expect geriatric racist and sexist fools like Imus to attack black women. I am historically numb to such ancient racial hatred and verbal abuse. Interracial hatred may indeed be an eternal and global human flaw.

It is the intraracial misogyny that wounds me. I am always deeply wounded when my own “brothers” attack me so routinely, ruthlessly, gleefully, and profitably, that to compare them to Imus is to make him sound like a multicultural saint! To illustrate my point: There is a “columnist” that poses publicly as a lover of black women, yet he regularly curses and vulgarly libels me in emails as no other black male hater I have ever endured. I am adept at ignoring such juvenile wannabees. I will continue to ignore him because he is insignificant enough to ignore.

But, I can never ignore all of the significant “brothers” who disrespect me and my sisters in all media daily. “Brothers” like Eddie Murphy, R. Kelly (When is he ever going to trial?!?), Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, and countless other “brothers” who incessantly slander us as “skeezers, skanks, tricks, bitches, hos, hood rats etc...”. I can never ignore all of the national award shows that increasingly give Oscars and Grammies to “pimps” as financial and artistic kudos that encourage these “brothers” to continue such degradation for fame and fortune.

For the record, I never had any love for Imus. But, I thought my ”brothers” were supposed to love me and inspire me to love them. As Alice Walker penned, black men are supposed to hold up half of the sky for us, as we hold up the other half for them. So, why is it that nearly every time I hear a Top 40 rap or soul song, or watch a popular video or film created by a black male, I feel like the sky is falling? Imus may feel like Chicken Little. But, my pain is caused by too many "brothers" feeling that all black women are chicken heads.

The droves of Imus’ in this world have existed and will exist forever. Imus has many racist and sexist media clones that are still getting rich in media outlets all over Amerikkka. But, my "brothers" are not supposed to be stacking papers from the same toxic coffers. Yet, they are making even more millions than Imus has from the sales of their collective misogynistic “art” and souls. Still, there is no outcry against the media pimps who pay these black men to degrade us. Imus has been cut off of the stroll. But, these black male media whores stroll on…

Who will cry out about the sexist evil that so many black men do as loudly as some have cried out about the temporarily unemployed Imus? The sound of that selective silence is very much louder than Imus’ former microphone ever was…

It is amusing and ironic that Imus built his entire career upon vulgar, racist, and sexist antics on air. Yet, he has now been fired for that very same foolishness. For now, Imus has been slain. What will his slayers do now?

Those who slay dragons like Imus are indeed heroes. Will these heroes now vacation or slay other dragons? Many more are lurking and employed in studios everywhere. And, dragon slayers are only as heroic as the last dragon they slew…
