TECA 1318 FIELD BASE EXPERIENCE PROMPTS:  Be sure that you include the name of your campus in each of your prompts responses. 

1. Campus Data - Due March 2  NOTE:  This information should be available on the campus webpage.
• What is the name of the campus and school district in which you are interning?
• List the titles and names following personnel:  principal, vice-principal (or instructional coordinator), counselor, nurse, librarian, and any other support personnel not listed.
• Give the address and location of the campus.
• What is the URL for the campus webpage?
• Describe the environment in which you are interning i.e. private preschool/school, religious sponsorship, public school, grade level; location.
• How many faculty members serve this campus?  Give this by grade level and/or content area.
• What is the academic rating for this campus?
• If it is a low-performing school, what special efforts are being made to improve?  Give details.
• What support programs do they have and how many?  (Example:  content mastery, dyslexia, special education, at risk, tutorials, ESL, etc.)

2.  Health Program
• Who is the school nurse?  What are her duties?
• What kind of equipment is there in the nurse’s office?  How is it used?
• What is the policy for dispensing medications to students?  What are the health requirements to attend school?
• How are parents made aware of the health requirements?  Is there a parent information pamphlet provided? 
• What is the procedures for the following crisis situations:
1. Minor injury to a child
2. Major injury to a child
3. Seizure
4. Lice
5. Communicable disease
6. Vision/hearing problems
• Does the nurse perform annual or routine assessments for students?  What are they and when are they given?  (Example:  vision, hearing, scoliosis, etc.)

3.  Nutrition Program.
• Who is the district dietitian?
• What are the rules for behavior in the cafeteria during lunch time.
• What food and nutrition guidelines does the campus have?  (Example:  lunches brought from home, vending machines, food in the classroom)
• What is the campus policy for parties?
• Are there snacks provided as part of the daily routine? 
• Are the nutrition guidelines different for oncampus programs after school hours?
• Look at a week’s worth of cafeteria menus.  Analyze the weekly menu in terms of the New Food Pyramid guidelines.  Be specific.
• What if any restrictions are there for lunches students bring from home?
• If snacks are provided, discuss what and how they are given to the children.
• Interview the director of the campus lunch program.  Ask the following questions:
1. What seems to be the favorite lunch item?
2. What is the procedure for children ordering lunch?
3. What is the cost of the lunch?
4. What is her opinion about the federal lunch program?
5. Observe several (three or more) lunch periods. 
a. What items were discarded most by the students?
b. Which lunch food seemed to be the most liked?
c. Check several meals brought from home.  Analyze the contents on those lunches.

4.  Safety Issues
• Who is responsible for the safety on your campus?
• Who and what is the Crisis Management Team?
• Is there a procedure for visitors on campus?  What is it?
• What provisions/preparedness items are found in the classroom?
• What is the policy for campus intruders?
• Discuss some of the crisis issues confronted by that campus in the past two years.
• What precautions are taken to ensure student safety on campus?

5.  Based upon what you have read in your textbook, what if any changes would you
     suggest for your campus?
