Amendment 12 (1804)

Translation: The 12th Amendment says that the Electoral College must vote on separate ballads for the President and the Vice President. The restrictions are that an elector cannot vote for the President and Vice President that live in their home state.

History: When the Constitution was made political parties never came to play. It used to be that the runner up from the presidential election would be the Vice president. In 1795 Thomas Jefferson and John Adams ran against each other. Thomas Jefferson was a Democratic-Republican and Adams was a Federalist. Adams won and Jefferson became Vice President, but Jefferson had many conflicts with Adams. In the 1799 election the problems with the original regulations became more evident. Aaron Burr and Thomas Jefferson tied with 73 votes each in the Electoral College, but they were both from the same political party. As a result of the conflicts in two elections in a row, the 12th Amendment was passed.

Personal meaning: This Amendment is very important. If the Amendment wasn't passed Al Gore would be Bushes Vice President. I think Bush’s time in office is running a lot more smoothly without Gore. Imagine how many disputes there would have been over time if the runner up became Vice President.
