Rangnick loses job in Hannover 96

HANNOVER, Germany (AP)Ч The Bundesliga club Hannover 96 fired coach Ralf Rangnick on Sunday.

Hannover lost to Borussia Moenchengladbach 1-0 in a Bundelsiga match Saturday between two relegation-threatened teams.

The club's management said in a statement it was forced to take the step because of the team's "continuing negative trend."

Hannover has won just one of nine matches and plummeted to 15th, one slot above the demotion zone in Germany's top league.

Reports circulated all week in local newspapers that Rangnick was on his way out and the latest defeat sealed his fate.

Hannover has acquired several new players since the winter break, but only United States forward Clint Mathis - with four goals in six matches - has panned out. The newcomers, especially, have failed to shore up a shaky defense.

Until recently, Rangnick was regarded as one of Germany's most promising young coaches with a technical knowledge of the game second to few.

He was the seventh Bundesliga coach to lose his job this season.
