About The Gold Coast Local Group
How our group works
What we do as a group is up to the members to decide together. You may
volunteer to take charge of organising an event, or join a
sub-committee to help arrange a stall, with fundraising or for a
special event. Some people stay in contact primarily through the
group’s email list, supporting our events and campaigns, writing
letters or lending a hand as needed.
Meetings
Meetings give members the chance to discuss and effect the actions of
the group. They allow ideas to be exchanged, news to be shared and
topics discussed. They are held once a month on the first Thursday of
the month and generally run from 6.00 to 7.30 pm. Some members then
choose to spend a little time together in a less formal setting.
At
the beginning of each year the group will hold a planning session to
map out its aims and direction and main activities for the year.
Letter Writing/ Urgent Actions
Letter writing is a powerful tool that has been at the core of Amnesty
International’s work and has proven most successful in effecting
change. Cases are taken up by members within the group through the
Urgent Action Network, from the Quarterly AIA Newsletter or obtained
from the office or via internet. Currently, emails are distributed
throughout the group to be sent in response to human rights cases
around the world.
Sometimes
some of our members take special charge of writing and distributing
letters on recent cases, to which other group members can simply add
their name and details and send to the leaders of countries involved.
These are usually distributed via the internet. This makes campaigning
very easy, especially for members with little time to compose their own
letters. Group support also encourages members in sending a significant
number of letters throughout the year.
Fundraising
As a group, we plan to raise funds that will be contributed to Amnesty
International through the Queensland Office.
Stalls
Stalls are used to raise awareness about Amnesty International, attract
interest in campaigns andincrease membership & support.
Campaigns
Specific campaigns are run by Amnesty International Australia
throughout the year. Currently the main campaigns are Stop Violence
Against Women, Refugees, Human Rights, Human Rights and Security and
Abolish the Death Penalty. As a group we decide what level of
involvement we would like to have.

Trivia Night 2007
Tuesday, 3rd July 2007
Our second annual Trivia Night was a huge success, raising close to
$1000 for Amnesty International. The crowd of close to 100 attendees
had a great night, took home some brilliant prizes and will hopefully
return next year! Thanks to Maree for organising the event.
Festival
Sunday, 1 April 2007
An awesome day was had by local group members who flew the flag for AIA
at the Vfestival on April 1. The crowd was primed/ready for
hand-stamping, learning a little about AI and showing the love…
Stalls Coordinator Jess ensured the day ran smoothly – petitions were
signed, AIA literature distributed and donations received. Patrick had
a good day too.
David Hicks Cell Tour
Friday/Saturday, 30-31 March 2007
The Gold Coast AI group hosted the Gold Coast leg of the David Hicks
Cell Tour in late March. Weathering the (inevitable?) GCCC/local media
storm, Cell Tour Coordinator Patrick’s efforts prevailed, ensuring a
memorable experience for group members who helped out and the local
community who turned out to see what life was like inside a Guantanamo
Bay cell.
Broadbeach Markets
Sunday, 18 March 2007
The Gold Coast AI Group held a SVAW- (Stop Violence Against Women)
themed stall at the Broadie markets in March. Organised by Stalls
Coordinator Jess, the stall was well-attended and featured
hand-stamping and a petition for a National Plan of Action to stop
violence against women – over 150 signatures were collected. General
AIA literature was available and market-goers were generous with their
donations.
Burleigh Markets
Saturday, 25 November, 2006
Burleigh Markets, Burleigh Heads
We held a stall at the markets, and attained 38 signatures for the
petition to the senate to support Australia's commitment to a National
Plan of Action to eliminate violence against women, 23 hand stamps for
the banner, and raised $103.30 through the sale of SVAW calico bags,
white ribbons, cards and rock4rights t-shirts. It was good to get the
Amnesty name out there and there was a lot of support for the SVAW
(Stop Violence Against Women) campaign.
rock4rights, 06 all ages music festival
Saturday, 23 September 2006
Albert Waterways, Broadbeach
The rock4rights music festival was a brilliant success for a first time
all day music festival organised mostly by our own Andrew Gunter. The
line up of Australian acts, all with extensive JJJ airplay, included
Kate Miller-Hiedke, Shifter, Transport, and The Black Market Rhythm
Company. The mostly teenage crowd were very well behaved, and keen to
return for the next edition, which can only be bigger and better as
word travels. The rock4rights
site continues to keep young people updated with news, and human rights
actions to get involved with. Other successes of the day were sales of
both rock4rights, and other Amnesty t-shirts, and also sales of Amnesty
wrist bands, which are currently all the rage with the youth.
Quiz Night
Tuesday, 11 July, 2006
Italo-Australian Club, Clear Island Waters (Mermaid Waters)
The Brisbane AI local group holds a very successful bi-annual quiz
night, so we emulated their formula for this classic fun night. A fun
night was had by all, and we raised over $1,000 for Amnesty
International. Thanks to Andrew McMicking for volunteering to call the
night!
