Bessie (Diane Keaton) and Lee (Meryl Streep) are brought together by leukemia

Plot
Sisters who have be leading separate lives, are brought together when a doctor (Robert De Niro) tells one of the sisters, Bessie (Diane Keaton) that she has leukemia and will die without a bone marrow transplant. The other sister, Lee (Meryl Streep) has two sons, Hank (Leonardo DiCaprio) who is put in an mental institution, and Charlie, the younger brother. Although they haven't spoken to each other in years, they are brought together by the possibility that Lee or the family may have a transplantable bone marrow. The reunion of Bessie and Lee brings tension between the family members but soon their love and compassion is tested finding each other.

De Niro picks DiCaprio
While trying to find the right actor for Hank, Robert De Niro picked Leonardo DiCaprio for the part. Again, DiCaprio was working with De Niro after first working with him in This Boy's Life.
