Treknology in Paper Models

This is an archive of links to Free - yes FREE! - Paper Models of Star Trek Spacecraft arranged in subject and chronological order to form a "Virtual Museum" of the Star Trek Universe. Based on an original list by Scott K. it is correct as at 25th April 2004

Many of the models and photos listed below are in the current archives of one or other of these Paper modelling SmartGroups: free to join and yet an authoratative and helpful crew, willing to share files, links, pictures and perhaps most important of all, advice...
Papermodels
This is the premier papermodelling group on the Internet with a huge membership that spans the globe, an active, varied and helpful Message List plus Albums and File archives jam packed with fascinating content. In addition, the Papermodel group currently has four caches:
01, 02, 03, 04
... on which the oldest pictures and files are periodically archived to. You need to join each group individually to get full access to all files (ie membership of one group does not imply membership of any others)
Paper Model Designers
The focus of this group is on the discussion of matters dealing directly with paper Model Design and designers. A few models archived here but mostly deals with techniques.

Star Trek & Other Scifi. Paper Models
A group especially about Star Trek Paper Models. Very few models archived here at the moment, but this is where I will be putting information about the updating of this web page.

USS Essex; Daedalus Class Cruiser (2161-2167)
Developed towards the end of the Romulan War, the Daedalus class was the workhorse of the newly created Starfleet. The USS Essex was one of the earliest of its' class, commanded by Captain Bryce Shumar . The Essex was lost with all hands in an electromagnetic storm near Mab-Bu VI caused by noncorporeal criminals from the Ux-Mal system who were trying to escape on board her. In 2368, the Enterprise-D came in contact with those same beings when they masqueraded as descendants of the Essex's crew. Other ships believed to be of the same class were the U.S.S. Archon and the U.S.S. Horizon

  • The Mad Modeller Massamune started making a detailed model of the Enterprise-D in May 2004 (Check the message archive on the PaperModels Smartgroup) and in July reported "There are a few more pieces to model up before flattening, then the long procedure of engineering the pattern, and painting. Testbuild will probably be 1:2000, but the final kit may be 1:1500(48cm) or 1:1000(64cm)"... Graphics of the 3D model were in an album on the Papermodel SmartGroup but it is gone now.

Hand Phasers
The weapons used by Federation personnel. The models have been made available by Mike Haggard on his 'Albion Rising' website - Whilst you're there checkout 'The Haggards' models made to complement his soon-to-be-released fiction.

  • Phaser Type I ("Pocket" phaser, c. 2266)
The earliest version of the standard Starfleet hand weapon was a small, easily-concealed sidearm carried by landing parties which was capable of a variety of settings and beam widths and was carried on diplomatic or low-risk missions. For information on the TV show props, see RACprops
  • Phaser Type II ("Pistol" phaser, c. 2266)
This was a Type-I phaser with a pistol-grip attachment containing a power pack in the pistol handle, and a wider range of settings and beams. Carried openly by security personnel, and by all crewmembers on hazardous missions. It was used through to ST III. For an exhaustive article on the prop, see RACprops
  • Phaser Type II ("Cobra" phaser, 2365 onwards)
Not the " Dustbuster" variant used in early TNG episodes (2350 - 2365) but the " Cobra Phaser" which lasted clear through to Voyager. Hand phaser with 16 settings, basic controls were three main buttons: Beam Intensity, Beam Width and the trigger.

  • Other LCARS Graphics are available from a number of sites eg. JefferyGuide

  • as jpgs from the alt.startrek.lcars is a Newsgroup dedicated to the system, has links to a functioning Comm Badge project - of modelling interest is a download of the LCARS font and the colour codes of the Voyager LCARS scheme (see also here)
