"A Change Of Perspective"

AUTHOR'S NOTE: This vignette from Mulder’s pov takes place late in the 8th season after the episode “Vienen” but prior to the birth of Scully’s baby.

My initial opinion of John Doggett was that he was an ambitious s.o.b. that was willing to use anyone he could to climb his way up the ranks of the Bureau. The fact that he was cozy with Kersch and had taken my place in the X files seemed to confirm that.

His personnel file did not do much to sway my opinion.  From his education to his military and police careers and now in the FBI, Doggett seems to excel at everything he does. But not without a price; his son’s death is a testament to that.

Scully trusts him, and respects him.  She has told me on more than one occasion that she would not have made it through the months I was missing without the support she received from her new partner. And she insists that her unborn child would not have survived without him. I can count on one hand the number of people Scully considers friends; John Doggett is now among them.

In recent weeks I’ve had the opportunity to work with him myself, and discover firsthand what kind of man he is.  He’s not what I thought he was, or expected him to be. Instead he’s much the man Scully describes:  intense, loyal, honest.

Maybe a change of perspective isn’t such a bad thing.
