INJURIES FATAL TO WOMAN STRUCK BY AUTO ANOTHER BADLY HURT

A sad accident occurred about 10 o'clock last night at the western end of Boston Run which resulted in the death of one woman and probable fatal injuries to another when both were run down by an auto driven by Adain Donahue, seventeen years old of Mahanoy Plane.
Mrs. Murphy, 56 years old accompanied by her younger daughter, Elizabeth and Sister-in-Law Mrs. Catherine Purcell, widow of Michael Purcell, who made her home with the Murphy family, were walking in the west end of the village at the time stated when the accident occurred. A closed car driven by Adrain Donahue in which his brother, Francis and a neighbor, Paul Braywsky were riding, came along and struck both women. Young Donahue said he was driving at a moderate speed. A car owned by Joseph Beaumont of Frackville was parked on the left side of the road with lights burning according to his story and this blinded him. He said Mrs. Purcell stepped from behind the parked car and was about to cross the street when Mrs. Murphy tried to grab her and pull her out of harm's way. Both were struck and hurled from the street.
The three young men picked up the injured women and placed them in the car and drove to the office of Dr. P. B. Dunn of Mahanoy City. Mrs. Murphy was in the throes of death and a priest was hurriedly summoned, who administered the Last Rites of the Catholic Church, after which she passed away. Her skull was fractured and she suffered bodily injuries and also from shock.
Mrs. Purcell who is more than seventy years old was given attention by Dr. Dunn who then accompanied her to the Murphy home and made an examination. He found she suffers from a fissure fracture of the skull, lacerations of the face and suffering from shock. She was removed to the State Hospital at Fountain Springs where she is in critical condition, due to her advanced years.
News of the accident spread rapidly and a large crowd soon collected. Mrs. Purcell was taken to the hospital in the Reading Company ambulance. After taking the body of Mrs. Murphy and Mrs. Purcell to the Murphy home the three young men returned to their homes. Adrain Donahue, the driver, collapsed when he reached his home and was in serious condition all night, due to shock. He said the accident was unavoidable and he did everything to stop when he saw Mrs. Purcell emerge from behind the parked car. He feels the sad affairs keenly and all day was in a state of collapse.
The scene at the Murphy home was most pitiful when both victims were carried in and the family was unconsolable. Mrs. Murphy was a resident of Wiggans and Boston Run all her life, she was a woman held high in the community and expressions of sorrow and sympathy were expressed on all sides. She is survived by her husband, 5 daughters; Mrs Harry Hughes and Mrs Charles Heffner, Wiggans, Mrs. Charles Hamel of Philadelphia and Anna and Elizabeth Murphy at home and one son Martin, one sister Mrs Patrick Naughton of St. Nicholas, one brother, Roger Sherry, inside Forman at Tunnel Ridge Colliery also survive
Mrs. Purcell resided at the corner of Cherry and West Streets, town, for many years and is well known here. A son Tobias Purcell resides in Atlantic City. Miss Catherine Purcell of West Oak St. is a granddaughter.
Joseph Beaumont of Frackville who was an eye witness to the accident made a statement today in which he said he was sanding on the side of the road when he saw the women coming alongside his car, one ran ahead of the other in the path of the oncoming auto while the other tried to rescue her, when both were knocked down. He said in his statement the accident was unavoidable.

Catherine Purcell mentioned in this article is really Margaret Murphy Purcell,
Michael Murphy's sister

[NI0033] In 1860, Terrance and Kate Sherry are listed in Mahanoy
Township, Pitman Post Office. The enumerator listed
Pitman as Mahanoy Township when it should have
been Upper Mahantango Township or Eldred Township.
The area around Pitman may have been part of Upper
Mahanoy Township when it was part of Northumberland
County before the formation of Schuylkill County.

[NI0375] From The Pottsville Republican
March 9, 1907
Francis King, the venerable father of Mrs. P.M. Dunn of Minersville died early this morning at the residence of his son in law, Judge Dunn.
He was eighty-nine years of age until recently was hale and hearty. His robust constitution was the result of a careful and temperate life and he continued to enjoy fair health almost up to the day of his death. Paralysis, due to natural failing of his system, took place in the week and was the cause of his demise.

Mr. King was widely known throughout the county. He resided in Minersville for a great many years being engaged in the shoemaking business. Upon his retirement he made his home with his daughter. He was a man of keen intelligence, a great reader and a close student of history and current events. He was of a kindly disposition, thoughtful, considerate and attentive to the little courtesies of life. He was a general favorite among his home people and his death has called forth universal regret. The deceased is survived by Mrs. Dunn, Minersville and Mrs. Mary Duffy, New York. A daughter Mrs. Bigler died a short time ago. Mrs. King has been dead for many years.

Pottsville Republican -- March 11, 1907

The funeral of Francis King took place this morning from the home of his son-in-law Judge P.M. Dunn. And proceeded to St. Vincent de Paul's Church where mass was celebrated by Rev. P. J. McMahon. Interment was made in the parish cemetery. The funeral was very largely attended by the many friends of the family from Minersville and various parts of the county. The pall bearers were John McNelis, James Nolan, James Maher, William Foran, P. J. Gaffney and Bernard Gallagher. F.J. Hummel was the funeral director.

1900 Federal Population Census enumerates Francis King with the Family of his daughter Margaret and her husband Patrick Dunn. Census shows year of emigration to be 1846
