... Andy & Antonio Scenes From OLTL

        ~*~Javier Uses Antonio's Knife To Stab Kevin~*~

After their last fight in Angel Square, Javier Perez stole Antonio's knife and used it to stab Kevin Buchanan. When Andy showed up at the crime scene with the LPD, she found the knife, and recognizing it as Antonio's, took it home with her. She and Antonio have been pondering what to do with it ever since. Antonio knows Javier was the one who took the knife and who stabbed Kevin, but he didn't tell Andy about that. Unknown to them both, Javier has retrieved the knife from its hiding place in Antonio's apartment. Antonio left work at the diner to find Andy because he wanted to go back home and discuss the situation....

Andy: All I'm saying is I didn't think you could afford someone else just so we could talk in private.

Antonio: And I'm telling you this is more important than that. This is about who you are.

        Andy: What?

Antonio: Look, I been thinking and we're doing this all wrong.

Andy: What, trying to find the guy who's framing you?

        Antonio: No.

        Andy: Well, then what?

Antonio: Look at you. You're all nervous.

        Andy: And you're not?

Antonio: Yeah, but I'm having it stuck to me. You're sticking it to yourself.

Andy: Okay. Sorry. You're right. It's just that I'm tense. I'm trying to find a way out of this trap we're in.

Antonio: You got a way. You go back to the scene, you find the knife you been holding back, and you turn it in.

Andy: Oh, great. When I do that, they come after you. They know it's yours, and it's got your prints all over it.

        Antonio: That's my problem.

Andy: I thought we were in this together.

Antonio: Look, you're breaking the law protecting me. How long you think you can keep doing that?

Antonio: I don't know what choice you think you have. You get caught withholding evidence, and that's it. Your career is over.

Andy: Well, they frame you for a crime you didn't commit, and that's it. My life is over. You still don't get it, do you? I don't think I could live without you. So I guess that's it. We hang onto the knife a little longer.

Andy turns to get the knife out of the drawer.

Andy: But we gotta get it out of here. I mean, it's one thing that I bagged it and tagged it and didn't turn it in, but if they catch it in your possession....

Andy looks way, way down in the drawer. Antonio tries to look over her shoulder.

        Andy: Wait a minute....

        Antonio: Wh.... What's wrong?

        Andy: It's not here.

        Antonio: What?

        Andy: It's gone.

Antonio: But I saw you put it there before we left.

        Andy: Well, it's gone.

Antonio: Well, where did it go?

Andy: You did something with it, didn't you?

Well, no, of course, Antonio didn't, but he still gives her an inexplicably guilty look, possibly because he knows exactly who has his knife....

Antonio: You think I took that knife?

Andy: Well, then, tell me you didn't. I put it in this drawer. You saw me do it. Nobody else could have possibly seen me do it.

Antonio: I didn't take the knife.

Andy continues to look around the room. Antonio stands around and watches her.

Andy: Then tell me where it went then....Come on....You think you're doing me a favor? Well, you're not. I know you didn't want me to get in trouble for withholding evidence, but if they find out, we're only going to get in worse trouble than now. Things are going to get worse for me, and you are going to look more guilty than ever.

Antonio: What, is my English not good? How come you don't understand what I'm saying? I told you I didn't take the knife!

Andy: And I'm saying it didn't just walk off by itself. You and I were the only ones who know there was a knife.

Antonio: What about the guy that used it to stab Kevin? He dropped it in the garage on purpose because the knife was mine, and he knew that when the cops found it they would be knocking down my door, but something goes wrong and the knife isn't found. At least, that's what the cops say. And the guy wonders...hmmmm...someone in the LPD must be helping and protecting Antonio Vega. And they know you and I are together.

Andy: Then why would I hide it at your place? Why wouldn't I hide it in my own?

Antonio looks at her skeptically because he knows what the audience also knows and the knifer undoubtedly knows, too. Andy never goes home. It seems to dawn on Andy that she hasn't been home in weeks.

Andy: Okay, okay, okay. Say that they actually think that I'm as dumb as I really am and that I did hide it here. How does the guy get in? The door was locked when I got back.

Antonio: I could open that door with a credit card.

Andy: But nothing's been moved. I mean, come on, look around. Nothing's (notices another drawer in the cabinet)...Oh....My God....The door's open.

        Antonio: So?

Andy: So, it was sticking this morning. I had to kick it shut. God. Somebody...somebody was here. Tonio, I'm really sorry. I--

Antonio: Yeah. You're sorry 'cause you go the evidence that I was telling the truth. That's what you need, isn't it? 'Cause my word isn't good enough. You wanna tell me what you think that says about you and me?

Having still neglected to tell Andy about Javier's role in any of this, Antonio is in the process of going very slowly out the door.

        Andy: Were are you going?

        Antonio: Out.

Antonio stops going out long enough to let her come over and lay her head on his shoulder.

Andy: Please don't. C'mon. I said I was sorry. I suspect everybody. Look, I don't even trust myself. It's a problem, Tonio. Please help me, because I love you and I don't want to lose you.

Antonio: Yeah. You love me, but when something disappears, the first thought that comes to your head is Antonio took it. And why would I steal the knife unless you thought I stabbed Kevin and had to dump the evidence?

Andy: Wait! I know that's not what happened! I know. Please stay and talk this out with me.

Antonio: We already talked. I told you the truth, you didn't believe me. We can talk 'til we're blue in the face. You don't believe me.

        Antonio leaves.

Andy: Antonio, Wait. God. What have I done?

Antonio arrives in Angel Square where everyone is preparing for the community center auction.

        Eddie: Hey, Tonio--

        Antonio brushes him off.

Antonio: It's been a bad day, bro.

Antonio stalks toward Javier, fists clenched, eyes glaring, and nostrils flaring.

        Antonio: You!

Javier: (looks up and sees him) Ave maria. Here he comes.

Javier starts off in the opposite direction. Antonio grabs his arm and jerks him around until he can grab him by the collar.

        Antonio: No, you don't.

Javier: (sighs wearily) I didn't do nothing, alright?

Antonio: You think you're smart, don't you?

        Javier: Let go.

Javier knocks Antonio's hands away, but Antonio grabs him again.

Antonio: You took my knife and used it to stab Kevin Buchanan. Then you broke into my apartment and took the knife back.

Antonio glares and flares. Javier wags a finger in Antonio's face.

Javier: You got a problem, you better take it to your friends at the 5-0 or better yet, the judge who's gonna beam your ass back to--

Antonio: Enough already. I'm taking it to you.

Antonio hits Javier then knees him in the stomach, Javier straightens up, shoves Antonio, and they begin to argue in Spanish as they fight.

Javier: What's your problem? You'd do the same! (says something and Antonio cuts him off)

Antonio: Enough already. We're fighting now.

They fight some more and say some unintelligible stuff.

        Antonio: Where's my knife?

Dylan, Eddie, and several others interrupt and drag Antonio and Javier off each other. Eddie and company hold back a grumbling Antonio while Dylan tries to get rid of Javier.

Javier: He's crazy, man! A loose cannon!

        Dylan: Go away, Javier.

Javier: All right, but you better watch out because this man, he's looking for blood. He's dangerous!

Javier and Antonio glare at each other one more time before Javier leaves.

Dylan is now trying to talk to Antonio about what caused all the excitement....

Antonio: Look, you know how it is with him.

Dylan: Well, it didn't look like to me he was the one starting it.

Antonio: (annoyed) Fine. I had a fight with Andy, okay? Now you know. I saw him and he pushed me over the top.

Dylan: So you have a fight with Andy and you go after Javier Perez?

Antonio: (defensive) Maybe he's starting trouble with me.

Dylan: What kind of trouble is he starting with you, Antonio?

Antonio: Nothing. Look, you wanna help? Try explaining her.

Dylan: What did Andy do, huh?

Antonio: From day one, she's been pushing. Telling me to open up and trust her. So I did. Either that or I saw I could lose her.

        Dylan: So?

Antonio: So I put it all on the table and told her I loved her.

Dylan: Good. What's wrong with that?

Antonio: Nothing except I thought loving each other meant trusting each other, too.

Dylan: That's what it does mean.

Antonio: Yeah, well, tell that to Andy. When it came right down to it, that's where it fell apart. She doesn't trust me.

Dylan: Well, did you giver her some sorta reason not to trust you?

        Antonio hesitates.

Dylan: You know, Antonio, why do I get the feeling you're not telling me something here?

Antonio exercises his right to remain silent.

Meanwhile, back at the LPD, Andy is trying to get some advice from Nora. She gives her a dollar to officially become her client....

Nora: You're getting a bargain, and I'm getting my curiosity satisfied. It's official. Speak, client.

        Andy: The knife.

        Nora: What knife?

Andy: The knife used to stab Kevin Buchanan.

        Nora: You found the knife?

Andy: I found it at the scene right away. I hid it--

Nora: (interrupts Andy) Wait a minute--

Andy: I know who it belongs to--

Nora: Oh, no, Andy, please not again!

Andy: But it was the only way I could protect him!

Nora: Don't you understand? Are you crazy? You just came from trial. You missed going to prison by this much because you made a big mistake and you withheld--

Andy: No, Nora, this time is different!

Nora: No. Guess again. It's not different. Now who are you sticking your neck out for? Tell me it's not another cop.

        Andy: No, not another cop.

        Nora: Who is it?

Andy: Just a friend, that's all.

Nora: No, I'm sorry. No one puts their career on the line for "just a friend". It has to be more than that. No....I think I can name that tune--

        Andy: Don't.

Nora: This just a friend didn't happen to be a parolee, somebody who happens to work for me?

Andy: No, Nora, don't. Let it go. Believe me, you don't wanna know.

Nora: There's something I need to know right now. You tell me you are sure, down to your little toes, that this just a friend didn't stab Kevin Buchanan?

        Andy: I'm sure.

        Nora: You're sure?

Andy: Absolutely. But I have no proof.

        Nora: You have the knife.

        Andy: Had. Somebody stole it.

        Nora: What?!?

Andy: Like I said, I had it hidden away. They found it.

Nora: There's absolutely only one thing to do, and you no what that is, Andy.

        Andy: No. I won't.

Meanwhile, back with Antonio and Dylan....

Dylan: So you wanna tell me to mind my own business?

Antonio: To tell the truth, no, I don't. There's too many people mixed up in this already, other people. It wouldn't be right to talk about it.

Dylan: Sure. Just one other thing though. When you get in a relationship, just because you open up doesn't mean everything's gonna be perfect. I mean, when it comes down to trust in a relationship, it's gotta be a two way street. You may find yourself with Andy somewhere down the line where you're not able to trust her.

        Antonio looks at him skeptically.

Dylan: Look, all I'm saying is don't give up on it so fast. What you've got is a good thing.

        Antonio: Yeah, I know.

        Dylan looks at him doubtfully

        Antonio: I hear you.

        Dylan: (still doubtfully) Do you?

Antonio: All right, Dylan, the tapes are over there. Let's go.

Dylan: Did you listen to a word I said?

Antonio: I heard you all right, so stop pickin' on-

Dylan: All right, fine, Mr. Smart Guy. What'd I say?

Antonio picks up Andy's picture and stares at it.

Antonio: All right. I know, it's got to come from both sides. If I want her to trust me, I've got to trust her.

Dylan: Well, you know, that's the way it's got to be. If I didn't trust Marty, really trust her, every time this Patrick Thornhart comes up drooling all over her, we'd have a real problem. We wouldn't have lasted this long. He's given me nothing but reasons to doubt her.

Antonio takes a second to look up at Dylan like he thinks he is stupid before looking back at his picture some more. Dylan looks over his shoulder.

        Dylan: Hey, nice smile.

        Antonio (smiles) Yeah, I know.

Dylan: Any idea where she might have gone?

Antonio: (sadly) I wish I knew.

Next scene, Andy hesitantly arrives back home to the apartment, and she and Antonio stand awkwardly in the doorway.

        Andy: Hi.

        Antonio: Hi.

Andy: Um...I got your message at the station....so I guess you know they caught the guy who stabbed Kevin.

Antonio: Yeah. I'm off the hook.

Andy: Tonio, I always believed in you, and I always will. You gotta believe that.

Antonio steps aside and Andy can see a candle light dinner set up.

        Antonio: For you.

Andy starts to cry and laugh at the same time.

Antonio and Andy are now sitting on the couch. Andy is still wiping her eyes.

Andy: I'm sorry. I don't know what made me cry like that. I guess it's just nerves, you know. God, this is so wonderful!

Andy wrings her hands distractedly. Antonio picks up both her hands and holds them in his.

Antonio: Listen, I know you've been under a lot of pressure, and I know it was really hard for you to hold back that evidence, but you trusted me, and I know you went against everything you believe in because you love me, and I never want to have to ask you to do that again. And I want you to know it meant the world to me.

Andy: The this is your knife. I mean, it's still gone, and we don't know who has it, and it could turn up anywhere. God only knows-

Antonio: My father gave me that knife and I want it back, but I don't want you to worry about it. I love you, but more than that, I trust you. I feel like I could put my life in your hands and never, ever, ever be afraid.

The scene fades out as they hug.
