The First Quilt

I made this first quilt for my husband. The quilt block pattern is called "Crossroads to Jericho." The top is machine-pieced, and the entire thing is hand-quilted, which probably explains why it took me two years to finish. The binding was pre-packaged.

Baby Quilt #1 (The Second Quilt, completed 04/02)

Scott (my husband) has a good friend who was soon to become a grandpa for the first time. He (my hubby) asked if I would be willing to make a quilt for this new grandchild, and I agreed. I was concerned, given the project time on the first quilt, about whether or not the child would get the quilt before attending kindergarten. The top was machine-pieced, and in a stroke of pure genius (and sheer laziness), I decided to machine-quilt it as well. EUREKA! I was suddenly in LOVE with quilting, since I could kick out a baby quilt in a weekend (as long as the quilt block pattern and layout are reasonably simple)! Right before we delivered this one to the expectant mama (on Mother's Day - the baby came in July, and she's beautiful!), we found out that ANOTHER grandchild is on the way as well! Obviously NOT the same mama - her brother and his wife are expecting as well. The first quilt turned out beautiful, all in shades of purple and lavender. The block pattern is my own design, based on a "Rail Fence" pattern, and similar to one I saw in a quilting magazine a few years back, but made as an equal-sided square when completed (the other was a rectangle block). I also designed the layout of the blocks and borders, and the binding is hand-made.

The Beginning of the Custom-Quilted Dog Bed Saga

On a whim, my husband decided he wanted to quilt. We went and purchased fabrics for him to make a quilt, for his DOG. (Yes, I said "for his dog.") I went to bed that night and he sat up to begin working on his quilt - when I arose the next morning, he was threatening to throw my sewing machine out the window, so I took over and finished piecing the top. I also came up with the idea of putting a pillow-sham/overlap back on it, and turning it into a dog bed. The pattern is a nine-patch with simple bar/square sashing and an outside border. The inner pillow is made of heavyweight cotton, and it's stuffed with shredded foam. The entire thing is both machine-pieced and machine-quilted; after the last quilt, Scott bought me a walking foot for my sewing machines.
And this is where it all began...

The Custom-Quilted Dog Bed Saga Continues...

When I finished the above-mentioned/pictured dog bed, I was pretty proud of my ingenuity and my handiwork, so I took the finished product to work to show off. Oh my...I got two orders in ONE DAY! I bought the fabrics and went to work, making TWO dog beds in exactly ONE week (and yes, I work full-time). Both were made with the same quilt block pattern, all machine-pieced and quilted. That's NOT the end of this story, however...

The Completed Beds

Thor FINALLY Gets a Bed!

Gravy's old dog bed had gone to Thor, when she got the new one. It was BADLY in need of a new cover, so using the same pattern on a larger scale, I made a cover for Thor's BIG dog bed!

Dog Beds - The Final Installment! *or* Sabrina's Granddog Bed!

All this time, I'm sending photos to all my friends every time I complete a new project. Sabrina, my friend in Kentucky, decided that she wanted to order one for her granddog, Winnie. Her daughter and granddaughter live in Florida, so I told her that I'd buy the fabrics and scan them for her approval, which I did, and then I'd hook up with her daughter to deliver it when it was done. I also took pictures of the delivery, for Sabrina to do a scrapbook page of the gift. From what I hear, the daughter, the granddaughter, AND the granddog are happy with the bed!

Baby Quilt #2 (The Third Quilt, completed 07/22/02)

I made another baby quilt, for the same grandpa/different parents. The quilt block pattern is called "Card Trick," and it's the most involved pattern I've done to date. It's all machine-pieced and machine-quilted; I made the binding. It's all primary colors, since the gender of the baby was unknown when the quilt was made!
Here's a picture of the block.
*****
I finished the quilt top before I left for vacation (July 2002), so I could take it with me to show my family in Ohio and North Carolina. Here are three shots of the finished quilt top.

Projects in Development

I've already purchased and cut the fabrics for a quilt that I designed for my eldest daughter, Becky. Since she's an avid golfer, it will follow a theme, using the "Snowball" quilt block pattern made to look like golf balls on a green background. I've assembled some golf-themed fabrics to use for the setting blocks in the sash as well, and a golf ball-patterned fabric for the backing. This quilt will require more actual quilting, since this pattern has larger open spaces in the blocks. My two younger children have also chosen patterns that they like: Kate has chosen a "Snail's Trail" pattern, and Brian has chosen "Ocean Waves." The fabrics are already purchased, but are not yet cut for these two. Keep checking back for more photos!

Due to becoming a full-time student, my time for craft-related projects is no more. :( Sooner or later, I'll have time again!
