The Dutch painter, Vincent Van Gogh was born in The Netherlands in 1853.  He decided to become an artist in 1881.  He went to art school, but mainly he taught himself how to paint.  He loved to live in the country and draw pictures of things in nature around him.  His paintings express his emotions of how he responds to the world around him.  He used thick brush strokes and pastels to make his paintings seem "drawn" instead of painted.  The style of art that Van Gogh used is called "impressionism."  This refers to the artistic style at the end of the 1880's.  Post-impressionistic art often contains bold, unrealistic colors and expressive brushstrokes.
