Do Chihuahuas Snore? (And Other Questions) |
|
Well, do Chihuahuas
snore?
Actually, yes; snoring (even fairly loud snoring!) is pretty common in Chihuahuas. Some think it is because of their short muzzle. Chihuahuas also often make snorting and grunting noises when they are playing or "investigating." Why the name Chihuahua? The name "Chihuahua" comes from the province in Mexico of the same name. (It's south of New Mexico.) The dogs were reportedly discovered there in the 1850s, though they had been bred by the Toltec people of Mexico as early as the 9th century A.D. How much do they weigh? And what's a "teacup" Chihuahua, anyway? A Chihuahua can range anywhere from under a pound to almost nine pounds, though most of them don't weigh over six or seven. "Teacup" Chihuahuas are especially tiny dogs, generally not weighing over a pound or two and usually able to fit in the palm of your hand - or a teacup. Aren't they mean? No! Like any dog, a Chihuahua will respond to the sort (and quantity) of attention he gets. They can be aggressive, but with a little training they make excellent companions, as they are intensely loyal and affectionate. Chihuahuas are "attention hounds" and love nothing more than being petted and held whenever possible. Love them and they will love you back! How long will a Chihuahua live? Because they're a "toy" breed, Chihuahuas have one of the longest life-spans in the canine world. They can live anywhere from eleven to twenty years. Are they dumb? Can they be trained? No and yes. Chihuahuas have sometimes had the reputation of being rather stupid because they bark easily and are generally rather nervous. However, this actually signifies intelligence, rather than the other way round. Chihuahuas are very alert and, with a little patience on the owner's part, can be trained. Do Chihuahuas burrow under everything? What are they, groundhogs? Burrowing is a natural trait for many dogs, including Chihuahuas. Some think this is because it gives the dog a feeling of security. Regardless of why they do it, Chihuahuas are more than happy to snuggle under almost anything, especially soft things like pillows and freshly-washed laundry. Keep a soft blanket or towel in your Chihuahua's "house" for him to wrap up in. Can Chihuahuas bake to death? Perhaps not quite to that extreme, but be careful when you have your dog outside, as Chihuahuas adore sun-bathing and will lie out in the sun as long as possible - often longer than is good for them. Chihuahuas, being tiny, are prone to heat-stroke, so keep an eye on your dog while he's out and make sure he doesn't get overheated. |
