| What to expect in therapy? | |||||||||||
| Therapy is a collaborative process and my clients are encouraged to work actively with me. This means that in addition to talking about problems, we will also spend time trying to understand what keeps problems alive and what prevents change. In addition, we will spend time learning new ways of thinking or doing things. In order to do this, clients may also be asked to practice exercises and tasks during the therapy session or at home. . How many sessions does it take? The therapy process usually takes from 10 to 20 weekly sessions. This however varies depending on needs. Some people take as little as five sessions to work through their problems while other might require longer term therapy. Often, clients will be able to assess for themselves if therapy is helping them by the fifth session. The First Session The frist session of therapy is devoted to understanding the client and their problems. As with all sessions, this session will last for an hour. At the end of the session, both I and client can then decide if therapy will be helpful. Early stage of therapy Depending on the complexity of problems, an assessment phase will continue for several more sessions. The aim of assessment is to arrive at a clear understanding of the problems and what contributes to them. Subsequent sessions Based on this formulation of problems, we will then work on learning new strategies of dealing with difficult situations and relationships. This often involves questioning some of our thoughts and beliefs, and doing tasks that break old unhelpful patterns of thought and behaviour. Ultimately, we aim to develop new helpful beliefs about ourselves, other people, the world and our future. |
