Jamaican Blue Mountains Peak Blue Mountain Peak is the highest point in Jamaica at 2,255.8 meters (7402 feet). The Blue Mountains are the site of Jamaica's first National Park. It ranges covers three parishes: St. Andrew, St. Thomas and Portland. The Blue Mountains peak is like a breath of fresh air and the lake resembles the clear blue sky. Nothing is heard but the crisp sound of animals who make these hills these mountains. Now you see why it’s called the Blue Mountains. The clouds, you see are to the North and South Coasts. At night, the lights of Kingston glisten in the distance like a Christmas tree. The flora and fauna to be found on the mountains are varied and indigenous to Jamaica. Two examples of indigenous plant life are the Portlandia Grandiflora and Aechmea Paniculigera or wild pine. Three hundred inches of rain fall east of the Blue Mountains range each year range, providing water for almost one half of Jamaica’s population. Together with the John Crow Mountains, this area is Jamaica’s last outstanding rainforest where many unusual and exotic plants can be found, as well as the world’s largest butterfly. There are some very pleasant walks from the small towns along the Port Antonio - Bowden road, especially at Ginger House where there is a pretty waterfall beside a cave and a mineral spring. It is a beautiful sight to see the wonders of mother nature. |
