Rick Hunter

An amateur pilot and "little brother" of Roy Fokker. Rick's initial reason for coming into the scene was to visit Roy and watch the historic launch of the SDF-1. As luck would have it, Rick gets involved with the interstellar war which begins over the Robotech battle fortress. Throughout the story, Rick is constantly struggling with his inner feelings. At first he is faced with the age-old fears of manhood and courage. He does not approve of violence and his reluctant commission into the Robotech Defence Force is tainted with the underlying fear of combat with gigantic alien invaders. After Roy's death, Rick becomes obsessed with proving himself as a courageous pilot. Throughout all of this, Rick is torn between two women. The first is Lynn Minmei, a young Chinese girl who he befriends in the early stages of the war. Minmei becomes an integral element of the Robotech wars and eventually has little time for Rick. The second woman is Lisa Hayes. Lisa is a woman he respects as a military superior and whom he eventually learns to love. His conflict in regard to his personal life and his duty to those he has vowed to defend make Rick an almost tragic figure in the Robotech saga.

Lisa Hayes

The daughter of Admiral Hayes, Lisa enlisted into the military after her fiance, Karl Riber, was assigned military reconnaissance duty on Mars. After graduating from the Robotech Space Academy, Lisa is assigned duty on the SDF-1. She becomes first officer in charge of supervising ship's operations. In this position Lisa also serves as defence controller. She devotes all her energy to her work as a substitute for her lost love. Because of this hardline approach to her duties, Lisa is often regarded as a career woman not interested in the opposite sex. Eventually Lisa falls in love with Rick Hunter. It is a romance filled with missed opportunities and endless problems.

Lynn Minmei

Minmei's natural good looks and talents do not go overlooked onboard the SDF-1 and she becomes the darling of the ship. Lynn Minmei is one of a number of refugees who must live on the SDF-1 on its year-long journey back to Earth after the first space-fold goes wrong. She becomes "Miss Macross", and in this role tries to enrich the morale of the civilians and crew forced to exist on the gigantic spaceship. She is flirtatious by nature. Her innocence and lack of maturity causes her not to recognise Rick Hunter's growing infatuation with her. She leads him on in a sense, preferring to fulfill her role as the spiritual cheerleader of the SDF-1. Her singing ultimately inspires many of the Zentraedi soldiers to defect. Never having been exposed to form of culture outside of military existence, the warring alien race is captivated by the message contained in Minmei's music. Eventually Minmei grows to accept her responsibility as a leader in the reconstruction of the Earth after the destruction leveled upon it by the Robotech war.

Roy Fokker

Roy is the heroic commander of the famed "Skull" squadron and assigned the monumental task of defending the SDF-1. He is the classic definition of a hero. He is also able to transcend his heroic mold to be human and compassionate. He likes to tease his friends, especially Rick Hunter, and create a feeling of comraderie. Roy is romantically involved with Claudia Grant. His death is a real shock for Claudia, and although he is gone, Roy's dynamic presense is seen through flashbacks. His raw courage and skill as a fighter pilot is matched only by Max Sterling.

Max Sterling

Initially a member of Rick Hunter's squad, Max quickly distinguishes himself as the first of a new generation of Robotech aces. He is pure perfection when it comes to flying and fighting in the Veritech fighter. He is a quiet person who pals around with Ben Dixon and Rick Hunter. Romance is not a part of his life until he meets up with Miriya, a Zentraedi combat ace, who infiltrates the SDF-1 in an attempt to assassinate her opposite number. Eventually Max and Miriya are married and their child, Dana Sterling, is one of the heroes of the world built out of the ashes of destruction after the first Robotech War. Max is never overly self-conscious about his talents as a pilot. He does the best he can and never tries to use his skill as a means to power or position.

Ben Dixon

A lighthearted combat pilot who is assigned to a position directly under Rick Hunter. Ben is a courageous fighter who is always trying to make the tragedy of war seem less real through his constant humour. His inexperience as a combat pilot is more than made up for by his courage and strength of will. He is eventually killed in the line of duty, which comes as another blow to Rick Hunter.

Claudia Grant

Claudia is in charge of communications onboard the SDF-1. Her job is to coordinate the various media elements of the huge space battle fortress as well as maintain defence communications with headquarters. She is romantically involved with Roy Fokker, and maintains a quiet private life. She tries to instill a sense of humour on the bridge as a contrast to the "no nonsense" Lisa Hayes. After Roy's death, Claudia tries to be philosophical and concentrates her energies to putting an end to the war which claimed her fiance.

Capt. Henry Gloval

The commander of the SDF-1. He comes from the old school of military thinking spawned during the years of experience as a line commander engaged in conventional warfare. He approaches his assignment on the SDF-1 with the characteristic determination of a war-weary veteran assigned to run an attraction at a futuristic amusement park. When necessity drives him to assume the role of combat leader for the combined Earth defence forces, his old fighting spirit comes back and he matches wits and strategy with the ruthless leaders of a vast alien armada bred for countless generations to be perfect fighting machines.

Dana Sterling

The daughter of Max Sterling and Miriya, Dana is a graduate of the Robotech Military Academy. Her status as a child of the heroes of the first Robotech war makes her choice of involvement in the military more of a game than a vocation. She has genuine innocence combined with a brilliant and curious mind. Her cross-breeding gives her the added dimension of precognition, and she is the catalyst of much of the action during the war against the Robotech Masters.

Bowie Grant

The younger brother of Claudia Grant, Bowie is a sensitive soft-spoken character. He is a sombre young man who meets a Robotech clone, Musica, and becomes infatuated with her and her music. He is a member of the signal corp and is generally a non-combatant in many of the conflicts. He is a close friend of Dana Sterling, and together they face many dangers. Bowie looks up to her as the sister he never much knew.

Louie Nichols

Louie is a near nerdish character who excels with machines, and is totally absorbed in the intricacies of Robotechnology. He tolerates the humdrum life of a soldier so long as he has time to tinker with his mecha. His dream is to use his knowledge of Robotech to create the ultimate machine, and is not much interested in girls.

Nova Satori

Nova is one of the highest ranking women in the elite Global Military Police. She is attractive but maintains a cold outer shell. She is a very good soldier who tries to go by the book. Her devotion to duty causes her to betray friendships for the betterment of the new society being built out of the ashes of the first Robotech war. Inwardly though, Nova is envious of Dana Sterling. She considers her to be a rival. Her jealousy stems in part from her avid disapproval of Dana's carefree attitude and fun-loving dispostion. Nova has the thankless jon of trying to glean information from the Robotech Masters's prime bioroid, Zor.

Marie Crystal

An ace pilot in the Armoured Tactical Space Corps, Marie is madly in love with Sean Phillips. She is a friend of Dana Sterling, and together they lead their squads with military precision as well as a sense of humour. Marie goes out of her way to snare Sean Phillips, only to be totally disappointed when she finds him with another woman. The whole incident is a mistake, but it colours Marie's outlook in regard to falling in love with a soldier with the reputation of Sean.

Sean Phillips

Formerly a first lieutenant and Dana Sterling's superior, Sean was demoted ro the rank of private because of his amourous advances to a female superior officer. Good-looking and aristocratic, Sean is a lady's man with more moves than Houdini. He is a good combat soldier and he eventually falls in love with Marie Crystal.

Angelo Dante

"Angie" is a rustic, down-to-earth kind of guy. He comes from the old school where might generally meant right. He is a strong trooper who grew up during the initial conflict with the Zentraedi. He has a chauvinistic attitude towards women and uses every opportunity to point out the differences between them. He is constantly at odd with his superior officer Dana Sterling.

Scott Bernard

Scott is one of the new generation of Robotech Defenders who was born in outer space on their journey to the homeworld of Robotechnology. He is a pilot in the Mars Division, one of the advanced interstellar battalions that is trying to reclaim Earth from the clutches of the Invid. He is one of the only survivors from the Robotech Defenders initial attempt to rout the invaders. He begins to organise a resistance force to battle the Invid as a means to get revenge on the murderers of his fiance who was also a pilot in the Mars Division who was not lucky enough to survive the initial combat. He is a moody and driven force who learns the value of true friends in the brave new world that he must carve for himself.

Rand

A young and impressionable freedom fighter who is educated by experience. He is the new hope of the Earth, and the everyman in the final act of Robotech. He takes on the role of protector as well as naive innocent, befriending Annie, the most vulnerable character in the series.

Rook Bartley

A moody character driven by a desire to avenge her apparent disgrace from being assaulted by a gang of undesirables when she was younger. She seems to have no fear of death. Her courage is drawn from some inner feelings which go beyond the normal desire of revenge. Rook tries to hide from the past and live for the moment without any thoughts for the future.

Lancer

A seasoned freedom fighter of Earth, Lancer assumes the role of female singing star "Yellow Dancer" in order to avoid being captured by the Invid forces. He joins with Scott and the others in waging a battle to regain control of the Earth. He sometimes takes his role as "Yellow Dancer" a bit too seriously, only to catch himself and make light of his dual identity. He is a courageous fighter and a true survivor.

Lunk

Lunk is a lovable character whose slow-witted humour is more than offset by his strength and courage. He joins with Scott and the others after he witnesses them defeat a squad of Invid. He is grateful for the opportunity to lend a hearty helping hand in the war to reclaim the Earth.

Annie

Annie is a spirited little freedom fighter who joins with Scott and the others. She is a smart and flirtatious character who is constantly getting into trouble over one thing or another. For all her tough exterior, Annie is still a vulnerable woman-child. She has the unique ability of eliciting both sensual spice and raw vitality; she's a rascal. Her nickname is "Mint" because she loves sweets and is especially fond of chocolate mints.
