Problem Child
by A. Price

"Kendra Joyce Harris, you are not leaving this house in
that outfit" said Xander Harris to his 17 year old daughter.
Her Mother nodded in agreement, "The skirt is too short, the
sweater is too low. Where did you get that outfit?"

"Babysitting money Mom. If I can't wear what I want, I'll
just stay home!" she shouted and ran up the stairs.

Buffy and Xander looked at each other in despair. "Should
I go after her?" asked Xander. "No, let her sulk for a
while." answered Buffy remembering being 17.

Kendra shoved the door to the bedroom she shared with
her 15 year old sister Alexia Willow Harris. She went
by Lexie. Kendra opened the window and started to climb
out. Lexie looked up from the computer.

Lexie Harris looked like her Dad, but she had the sweet
disposition of her Aunt Willow. She was a good child,
never caused trouble unlike Kendra. Kendra seemed to seek
out trouble. Kendra looked at Lexie, "Lexie, I'll be okay!
Don't worry."

"Where are you going?" asked Lexie. She loved her older
sister, they had become even closer since her brother Giles
had graduated from high school last year. He was at Oxford
Univerisity in England on an exchange program. Uncle Rupert
had helped get him into the program. She missed him though.

"Lexie, if I tell you, then you'll have to lie when they
ask you. I know you hate to lie. Just don't worry." Kendra
told her as she left out the window. She shimmied down the
tree and mouthed the word "Thanks" to Lexie and she was gone.

Angel watched Kendra shimmie down the tree. "Her Mother
would be proud at how well she got out that window" he
thought to himself with a smile. He assumed she was sneaking
out, he didn't know if he should tattle or just follow her.
Lexie was watching out the window, he knew she wouldn't tell
she was one of the sweetest kids he had ever met. Even if
she did look like Xander.

Angel followed Kendra to the end of the street, she met
a boy there. He didn't recognize him, she called him Keith.
She looked just like Buffy did at 17, in that little skirt.

Buffy decided to go check on Kendra, she should have cooled
off by now. She loved Kendra with all of her heart, but
she was without a doubt her problem child. Buffy couldn't
understand her stubborn streak.

She knocked on the bedroom door. "Come in" said Lexie. Buffy
came into the room and asked "Where is she Lexie?"

"I don't know Mom, she just said she'd be back" answered
Lexie honestly.

Buffy went back downstairs. "Xander your daughter is
missing" she said with a half smile. "I believe she took
the window exit."

Xander smiled at her "Now shes my daughter! That window
thing is genetic on your side Buffy." He laughed but Buffy
knew he was concerned. "I'll drive around and look for her"
he suggested.

"No, you proably wouldn't find her if she doesn't want to
be found, thats genetic on my side too!" Buffy said with
a smile. "We'll wait a little while and catch her when she
comes in."

Meanwhile, Angel had followed Kendra and Keith to the ice
cream place. They were eating ice cream and walking through
the park hand in hand. Sunnydale still wasn't the safest
place at night, even though vamp activity was way down.
Angel saw the vampire advancing on the couple before they
knew what happened. The vamp rushed for Kendra, she screamed,
Angel attacked and the vamp ran off into the night.

"Uncle Angel" said Kendra and she fell against him. He
patted her on the back "Its okay Kendra, let me get you two
home."

They walked a shaken Keith to his house and then walked to
hers. "Kendra, your parents don't know where you are, do
they?" he asked sternly.

"No, but Uncle Angel they never let me do anything. Its like
a prison there." she complained with a familiar pout.

"They love you Kendra, there are big bad things in this
world and they just want to protect you. Try to understand"
he said with a smile.

She shook her head yes, as they got to the front door.
Buffy and Xander were waiting for her. "Kendra" they said
in unison and hugged her.

"What happened?" asked Xander when he saw Angel with his
daughter.

"Uncle Angel saved Keith and I from a mugger, I guess he
was a mugger" explained Kendra.

Buffy looked at Angel with a raised eyebrow. Angel nodded
back to her answering her unasked question, yes it was
a vampire.

Xander looked at Kendra "Please don't leave like that
again. You scared us."

"I'm so sorry Daddy" she said with her best pout and little
girl voice.

"She does look like Buffy" thought Angel "And just like her
Mom she has Xander wrapped around her little finger."

Xander turned to Angel, "Thanks Angel, for looking out for
her."

Buffy smiled as she walked Angel to the door. Angel spoke
hesitantly "Buffy I'm not her Dad, I'm not anyones Dad. But
don't be too hard on her. I think she had learned a lesson."

"I know Angel, its tough to be 17. I do remember it. But
I don't understand why she is so stubborn. She has to do
everything her own way." Buffy told him with a sigh.

"Buffy, I am praying that you don't have a stake on you.
Because I am going to tell you something you don't want to
hear. The reason she is so stubborn is because she is your
daughter. She looks like you, and she acts just like you
did!" Angel said with a huge grin.

"I had reasons for sneaking out, I was the slayer" responded
Buffy.

"You snuck out for other things too. I believe we met at a
window a couple of times. Remeber those egg things, you were
grounded." he smiled at the memory.

"Okay, okay you win. I'll try not to be too hard on her.
But I am not stubborn." she smiled back at him.

"Right, Buffy. Take care!" he said as he hugged her and left.

Buffy went into the house to deal with her problem child.
She thought about what Angel had said. Maybe Kendra was
like her, the thought scared her. "Will I ever survive this?"
she thought to herself with a smile and opened the door
shere Xander and Kendra were waiting.

"Kendra" said Buffy smiling "I know that you feel like we
don't trust you, its not that. We just don't want you hurt.
What if Uncle Angel had not been there?" she asked her in
a serious voice.

"I know Mom, I'm sorry. I won't sneak out again. I didn't
mean to worry you. Its just that I never do the right thing,

Buffy and Xander looked at her "We love you Kendra, no
matter what. We know you are a good person. You just don't
look before you leap. Try to think next time" said Buffy
sounding like her own Mother.

"Okay" said Kendra and she did mean it when she said it.
She hugged her parents and told them she loved them. She
went upstairs.

Lexie got up when Kendra came in the room."Well, what
happened?" she asked quietly.

"Lexie, I went out for ice cream with Keith. It was great
he held my hand and we walked in the park. But a mugger she smiled as she told the story.

"Cool! Nothing ever happens to me" complained Lexie.

"Yeah, well at least your known as the good one! When
you start talking to boys things will happen Lexie" sighed
Kendra.

"I'm not the good one, I'm the boring one! And you know
I can't talk to boys" said Lexie shyly.

"That will change someday Lex. I love you little sis"
Kendra said as she climbed in her bed.

"Goodnight Kendra" whispered Lexie. "Night" said Kendra.

Downstairs Buffy and Xander were on the couch watching the
news. "Xan" said Buffy. "Yes, hon" he replied.

"Do you remember when I slayed vampires for a living?" she
asked.

"Of course, Buff. Why?" he asked her smiling.

"I think that was a far less stressfull job then being
a parent!" she exclaimed.

Xander laughed and put his arm around her. "You are a
sucess at both jobs, Buffy!" Then he kissed her and they
settled back on couch, happy and content.
