57 years later, a deep space salvage team finds Lt. Ripley's shuttle floating in space. Upon recovery from more than a half century of cryo-sleep, she presents her recollection of the Nostromo events to the Company. Since there is no evidence to support her story, they declare her psychologically unfit and revoke her flight officer's license. She is horrified to learn that over twenty years ago The Company colonized LV-426, the planet of the first encounter.
Soon after, communication with the colony is lost and the Company asks Ripley to return to the planet where her nightmares began. At first she refuses, but faced with a life of civilian work, she decides to go upon the Company's promise that the mission is to exterminate the creatures. She accompanies a squadron of Colonial Marines and a Company representative to investigate the communications loss.
At LV-426, the Marines find evidence of a fierce battle and one survivor, an 11 year old girl named Newt who survived for a year by living in the air ducts that were too small for the aliens. Though the Marines are trained and have heavy fire power, she doubts even they can defeat the creatures. The marines locate the rest of the colonists in one area and attempt a rescue. However, the trek leads them into the alien hive where they are ambushed, and half the platoon is lost. Even worse, one of the atmosphere processing plants was damaged during the hive raid and will cause LV-426 to explode in a little over a day.
The survivors hole up inside the Communications center to fend off alien attacks and await rescue. During this time, Burke, the Company Representative, attempts to impregnate Ripley and Newt by releasing some of the captured Facehuggers while they are sleeping. His plan fails and alerts Ripley and the remaining Marines of the Company's plan to return to earth with an alien for their Bio-Weapons Division. They also learn that Burke, who promised Ripley the mission was to destroy the creatures, was behind the whole scheme. The aliens deliver a final attack, killing Burke and all but one of the remaining Marines during a retreat to the Landing Field.
On the race to the landing field, Newt falls through a vent and is taken by an alien. Ripley makes the trip back into the hive to rescue her, and on their way out, walk into the alien Queen's den. With minutes left to escape, she torches the eggs and pumps several grenades into the Queens egg sac. Ripley and Newt run out of the hive and enraged, the Queen disconnects herself from the sac and takes chase. As the Queen approaches them for the kill, Bishop arrives in the Drop Ship just in time.
As they race into space LV-426 explodes below them. However, on the Sulaco, one last battle yet awaits when the stowaway Queen appears by ripping Bishop in half. They take cover, and Ripley reappears more equally matched in a Powerloader to engage the Queen in a duel comparable to a fist fight. In the final move, Ripley picks up the Queen and in a tense struggle, blows her out of the airlock.
Survivors: Ripley, Newt, Corporal Hicks, and the android Bishop.
