Design: The M56 Smart Gun is the US Colonial Marine Corps' primary squad machine gun. The Smart Gun's light weight allows it to be carried into combat on a self-aiming stabilized mount. For accuracy in aiming, it is linked to an infrared target tracking system.
The M56 uses a pulse-action system with a free-floating recoil dampener. It is constructed of molded carbon-fiber and light alloy stampings. A replaceable barrel system is air cooled. The gun mounts onto an operator's harness and linked to an infrared tracking system. It self-steers on the mount, but firing must be done manually.
Movement: The M56 is steered and held by its fore and aft grips. The articulation arm will self-steer the barrel to the target's center of mass when tracking. The gun's motion can be overridden at any time by simply steering the barrel manually.
Target Tracking: The tracking system scans a 30 degree cone in front of the gun and sends thermal images to a miniature video display in the operator's eyepiece. In the display, a lighted box appears over the target's center of mass. If there are multiple targets, the operator steers the barrel to whichever target he or she wishes to engage.
Firing: Firing is controlled from the forward hand grip or the rear firing handle. The operator has 3 choices for rate of fire: safe, 4 round burst and Autofire.
The ammunition has two settings: 'Super' for detonation on impact and 'Delay' for detonation once the target's armor is penetrated.
