J. Stephen Pearson, Ph.D.

(This page will redirect to my current site in 10 seconds!)

Welcome to my online office -- but Geocities is closing shop soon, so I've moved everything over to my UTK page -- see the links to the left for the link!

The links to the lift will take you to my official documents: CV, Professional Statements, Research Abstracts, etc. I'll be posting syllabi in the coming months, so stay tuned.

I am currently completing my dissertation and looking for a teaching position. My teaching focus has been on Ethnic U.S. Literature and on Classical World Literature. I am also interested in the genres of drama, short stories, and comedy.

My research involves a combination of multicultural theory and religious literature. I am especially interested in the rhetorical strategies of devotional literature and how they construct the reader's identity.

In teaching literature at the college level, I try to balance three goals:

1) providing students with the critical thinking skills (reading, writing and argumentation) they will need to advance into their major, graduate school and beyond;

2) helping students understand  the discipline-specific aspects of literature--how narrative and fiction communicate experiences and ideas; and

3) prompting students to use literature as a way to examine their own attitudes toward the world and to consider what opinions they need to change.

I enjoy literature that makes me think, that challenges the way I see the world and that shows me the depths of the human soul. If I can get my students to have a similar reaction, I have done my job.

Thanks for dropping by--feel free to chat!
