| The first Armenian Church in California was actually in Fresno(1892). It is pictured below, and it was burnt down eventually, as many of Armenian Churches were during the early twentieth century. The probable reasons for the racism is due to the generalization that Armenians are a type of Turk (world war one era, they were 'enemies'), the darker complexion, the anti-catholic tendencies of the era. Even our protestant churches were victimized by these people, and the Jim Crow laws (for which Fresno was the last city in California and probably the U.S. to revoke). |
