Indonesian crisis bring new fears of national breakup
Indonesia's political crisis has intensified with the vice president warning that the nation could
break up and become "the sick man of Asia."
Vice President Megawati Sukarnoputri's made the comment in a speach to a military think
tank.
She noted that many countries had disintegrated in recent years, and that this could also
happen to Indonesia.
Over the weekend, nine people died in the religious conflict between Muslims and Christians in
the Maluku islands and in a separatist war in Aceh, on Indonesia's northwestern tip.,
Megawatti says the country is facing some critical moments in politics, the economy, culture
as well as defense and security.
She says that unless Indonesia successfully deals with challenges to its transition to
democracy, it will descend and become the sick man of Asia.
