Jakarta Post (5/15/2001 5:44:36 PM) AMBON, Maluku (JP): Tension gripped restive Ambon on Tuesday following the deaths of two residents on Monday as a result of a series of communal clashes between Muslim and Christian groups, Pattimura Military Commander Brig. Gen. I Made Yasa said on Tuesday. The fatal incident took place in Laha village late on Monday, claiming the lives of Hasan Laen and an unidentified male resident, whose body was previously reported missing. The body of the unidentified male was recovered on Tuesday in Amahusu village, about four kilometers from Laha, the general said after the second anniversary of the Pattimura Military Command on Tuesday. An internal dispute also resulted in gunfights on the border of Batu Merah and Karang Panjang at 4 a.m. local time Tuesday, No casualties were reported. Following the new outbreak of violence, General Yasa said that he has ordered the Ambon Security Sector chief to step up patrols and sweeping operations, as well as submitting constant reports on the situation in the restive islands. "I have asked the authorities to provide reports of the situation every hour," Yasa said, adding that provocative actions by groups of rioters had intensified over the past few days. (49/edt)
