Passenger ferry fired upon while sailing in Ambon Bay
Indonesian Observer Saturday, May 12 - 2001

JAKARTA (IO) — A passenger ferry, the KM Kalifornia was shot at while
heading to the port of Galala, Baguala subdistrict, Ambon, yesterday in
Ambon Bay at around 3:20 pm.

The vessel was shot at when cruising the waters between Rumah Tiga
village, Kapahaha, and Batu Merah, destination Gudang Arang.

The hundreds of passengers on board the vessel were shocked by the barrage
of gunfire, and had to literally ‘hit the deck’ to avoid being hit by the
artillery fire.

Some of the passengers said the shots came from the coast of Rumah Tiga
and Batumerah.

A number of mariners who were escorting another motor vessel, Anda II,
also with passengers from Gudang Arang heading to Galala, retaliated and
fired their guns in the direction of the coast where the wild shots
emanated from.

Because of the incident, the captain of KM Kalifornia cancelled the trip
to Gudang Arang and headed for the naval base in Ambon for protection.

Nobody was hurt during the shootings.

Many locals in Ambon and Maluku own pistols as well as long-barrelled
rifles as they were reportedly supplied by sympathetic countries or from
illegal supplies in other islands.

Raids have been launched to collect all kinds of weapons including
firearms but the latter are still prevalent in the war-torn region, which
makes the volatile situation increasingly tense.
