Thalib meets Bimantoro for plea-bargain
Indonesian Observer Friday, May 18, 2001

JAKARTA (IO) – Commander of the holy war (jihad) force Jaffar Umar Thalib
and his lawyer Eggi Sudjana yesterday met Police Chief General Surojo
Bimantoro for a request on the termination of Thalib’s house detention
status.

Sudjana said once the request is processed by the police chief, he would
drop the lawsuit currently in being heard in a preliminary trial at the
South Jakarta District Court, which states his client was wrongfully
arrested.

“Responding to the request, the police chief has shown ‘positive signals’
and says he will consider it seriously,” Sudjana told the press.

Thalib was arrested by police and held under house arrest over an
accusation of inciting hatred between Muslim and Christians in the eastern
province of Maluku.

Thalib is also accused of killing one of his own members by stoning him to
death.

Thalib’s lawyers have defended him, saying that the arrest of his client
was politically motivated and then they filed lawsuit against the police
chief at a preliminary trial.

In the meantime, police spokesman Inspector General Didi Widayadi said
that Thalib is still under house arrest. “He arrives at the police
headquarters to meet Investigative Police Engkesman Hillep for detention
delay,” Didi said.

Commenting on the offer that Sudjana would drop the lawsuit if the police
release Thalib, Didi said that the police would process the case of Thalib
in accordance with existing procedures of professional law and order in
Indonesia.

“Whether the lawsuit will be dropped or not is his right. The preliminary
trial is held to control the performance of the police,” said Didi.

He elaborated that the release of Thalib could not be determined merely by
the revocation of the lawsuit.

He said that the status of Thalib is that he is currently under house
arrest.
