A-36 (Beechcraft Bonanza)
この飛行機の初期型の初飛行は1945年、それからも改良が続けられて現在でも生産が行われているという、とても息の長い飛行機です。初期の飛行機はModel 35と呼ばれ、V-Tailを装備していました。これは通常、水平尾翼と垂直尾翼からなる尾部が、V字型の二枚の翼で成り立っているものです。Beechcraft社は、「3枚の翼を2枚にすることで、1:抵抗の軽減、2:重量の軽減、3:経費の削減、4:主翼が生み出す気流の影響の低減などの効果がある」と、V-Tailの効果を宣伝しました。V-35 Bonanzaはその豪華な装備とともに人気になり、第二次大戦後の最も成功した工業製品の一つに数えられています。
V-Tailを装備したModel 35は、初期のTest Flightの段階でもHigh Speed Dive Test(急降下実験)で尾翼が脱落して死亡事故を起こす事故がありました。V-Tail機は、通常の3枚尾翼の飛行機と比べると、PitchとYawによる疲労が非常に大きいことが後の研究で明らかになりました。飛行中のV-Tail機の事故率は、通常尾翼機の実に24倍にも上るとされています。Beechdraft社は1982年にV-Tail機の生産を中止し、現在は通常尾翼のA-36が引き続き生産されています。
Bonanzaは日本の航空大学校でも訓練機として使用され、本国Americaでも医者や弁護士の乗り物として人気があります。「いつかはBonanza!」と夢見る訓練生もいます。ですが、人気とは裏腹に整備性の悪さには毎回悩まされます。「よい飛行機とは作業性のよいもの」という法則で行くと、この飛行機は完成度の低い飛行機となるのでしょうか?装備されているContinental IO-550 EngineのOil交換自体は問題ありませんが、Oil Filterの周りを多くのOil/Fuel Hoseが取り巻いていて、それらを外さないとOil Filterの取り外しができません。早さが求められるService Centerの整備士にはとても泣かされる作業です。
Cylinder交換では専用工具が大活躍です。中途半端な工具では作業は永遠にかかります。Engineの取り付け/取り外しも一苦労。同じA-36でも年式によるのでしょうが、前側CowlにEngineが当たってしまい、作業開始から機体からEngineが外れるだけで、2人がかりで2日はかかります。これでEngineが外れると確信して持ち上げ始め、Turbochargerが当たって外れない、再び降ろしてTurbochargerの取り外し、しかし今度はBolt/Nutに手が届かない、再び持ち上げて…など。気の遠くなる作業が続きます。次のEngine取り付けなどは1-2週間単位です。順番を間違えると付く部品も付かなくなります。手の小さな私はこのような狭い場所での作業で便利に使われますが、日本の航空大学校の整備士の方や他のMaintenance Shopではどのように作業しているのかとても気になります。
計基盤裏の作業も苦しいものです。他のCessnaやPiperの機体では、座席を外せば床が平らになるので、横に寝て計器盤の下側から手を伸ばして作業ができますが、この機体の場合は座席の下にLanding Gear/Flap Systemの空間があって平らになりません。それでもなんとか横になって作業をします。背中に座席取り付けの金具が当り、背中の痛い辛い作業です。
このような整備作業は整備士の問題であってOwner/Pilotには関係ないとも言えますが、結果的に期間も費用もかさむわけですし、Manufactureには改善を求めたいところです。と、ここまで書いて不満だらけになってしまいましたが、少々の軽さよりも強さを求めたこの機体はとても強靭です。生産後30-40年経っても、再塗装され整備の行き届いたBonanzaをよく見かけますが、それはとても美しいものです。新しい2004年製のA-36にはまだお目にかかっていませんが、どのようになっているのか気になるところです。
