TIME IS RUNNING OUT

The Tamamayu book had been restless all morning. An angry red glow surrounded it as it levitated, spinning slowly in an anticlockwise direction. It seemed to match Tokugawa's mood. But was it angry with Tokugawa, or angry at Tokugawa himself? The lord had been calmer that day; if the book was copying his mood shouldn't it have been a more neutral colour?
Strange happenings had been reported all over the city. Wells had turned sour, the sun had been blocked by thick cloud. A foul odour lingered around the Edo fortress. Surely it was the smell of death from the great battle just a few days past? But usually once the bodies were cleared, the smell only hung around for a day. The bodies had been cleared immediately after the threat had been eliminated, but the stench was still unbearable.
Togo had not turned up to the trial for Yi and Hanga. Although he did not know them very well except through battle, he had always thought highly of them. He had hidden a small smile when Tokugawa had ordered him to stay at his side. He would have been killed in that battle, his heart just saw no point in fighting. He had, however, requested to see the prisoners, and in a moment of mercy, Ieyasu had agreed.
"My siblings, I come to you unarmed." Togo looked up and saw the necklace round each of their necks, and was struck by the resemblance to his own necklace. All three were black leather, plaited, with a metallic disc as a pendant. On the back of each was the same kanji symbol. On the front, they were all different kanji. It was not required for simple samurai to know how to read kanji and none of them knew what they meant. Togo moved to get a little closer and the necklaces started illuminating.
A massive earthquake made the three stumble to the floor. The only light which came from the torches, and had been burning so bright just moments ago, disappeared plunging them into darkness.
