South East Asian Lepidoptera Conservation Symposium, Hong Kong 2006

The First South East Asian Lepidoptera Conservation Symposium took place in Hong Kong from 4th to 8th September 2006, hosted by Kadoorie Farm & Botanic Garden and held at the University of Hong Kong's Kadoorie Agricultural Research Centre.

Background:

Butterflies and moths (the order Lepidoptera) are increasingly recognised as a flagship group to monitor global warming and the rate and effects of habitat loss.

There are various bodies at national and local level, including many non-governmental organisations, that undertake conservation measures to some degree. However, unlike Europe, the Americas and Africa, there is no integrated approach to the conservation of butterflies and moths in the S. E. Asian Region.

This symposium was intended as a practical series of presentations and workshops aimed at assessing the current conservation status, then identifying and creating a framework for Lepidoptera conservation in the S.E.Asian Region.

Objectives:

To facilitate the conservation of S. E. Asian Lepidoptera by:
     1. assessing the current conservation status
     2. creating a regional network of organisations under an umbrella body
     3. developing a regional conservation strategy.

Core Themes:

A.   Assessment of the Conservation Status of South East Asian Lepidoptera

1. Review of existing conservation measures
2. Recording Schemes for the region’s Lepidoptera

B.   Regional Networking – Forming an Umbrella Body

3. Existing organisations

C.   Development of a Regional Conservation Strategy

4. Towards sustainable conservation: identifying needs of the region’s Lepidoptera
