Oriental tropics and subtropics; within China from Hebei, Shanxi, Hubei, Zhejiang, Hunan, Shanghai, Fujian, Taiwan, Guangdong, Guizhou, Sichuan and Yunnan (Mell, 1943; Wu, 1984; Peng & Liu, 1992; Wang, 1994b; Chen, 1999; Holloway, 2003).

In Hong Kong
Distribution: widespread.
Status: uncommon, with most records from secondary woodland.
Adult Phenology: undetermined; most records occur between mid-September and the end of November, although there are also single records from February, April, June, August and December.

Taxonomic note
Holloway (2003: 231) states that the placement of the genus Eligma within the Noctuoidea has yet to be resolved. The most likely placement options are either as a distinct subfamily within the Nolidae, or as a separate noctuoid family.
