| When I saw you, just this morning, you turned your face toward the light, and your cheek became a setting sun. I hid my breath. I noticed time was just a measure independent of your blinking eyes. Instead one blue became the ocean, and one green became the tree. Today, it seemed, there was too much else to see. Today you tried to smile, and then your mouth was only brilliant with the things it did not hold, like gasps of sunshine through a glade. I saw the space without you. It amazed me. I sat transfixed by nothing, by absolutely nothing. Above your tea, your face was Zen and glowing in the steam. Soft skin warm and full of butter, round and honest. I wasn’t lost. Instead, I saw a calm new world of sweet warm sky just as it was fanning out across the panting town. I did love you, but loved this new world too. |
