Opening Remarks

Welcoming remarks from

Shoshanah Asnis
editor-in-chief, Connecticut Journal of International Law
Kelly Cartwright
symposia and colloquia editor, Connecticut Journal of International Law
Joel Paul
director of international programs, University of Connecticut School of Law. Joel quoted a Russian colleague who said, "Women aren't interested in feminism, they're only interested in bread." To paraphrase early American feminists, Joel noted, "This conference not only about bread, but also about roses." He emphasized that the collapse of the communist system showed that many things that seem immutable, unchangeable are actually more permeable than we think.
