General Resources

  1. A Guide to URLs is a wonderfully informative guide covering many often overlooked aspects of URLs. The text and background, however, are set up in a way that can make it difficult for some people to read.

  2. Accessing The Internet By E-Mail [FTP] 56k text file. This is an interesting document, but useful only to people with limited Internet access. The methods are slow and cumbersome, but they do seem to work.

  3. Effective Bookmarks Management Focusing on PC versions of Netscape (from 1.2 to 3.0), this article is basically a tutorial on using Netscape's bookarking features. Dozens of screen shots and a nearly absurd number of pages make this something of a test of patience. It is competent but hardly compelling. The Evaluating Internet Resources section has a good premise, but offers nothing of any measurable value.

  4. Index to Multimedia Information Sources One long list on a wide range of topics that is decently organized but poorly maintained. Last modified in May (this review composed in early September), there were a number of File Not Found errors among the links. The title of this page should really have been a somewhat sorted list of technical links.

  5. Electronic Collections and Services Dozens of well sorted pointers to hundreds of very informative articles in categories such as Cataloging and Indexing of Electronic Resources, Internet History, Surveys and Statistics, and Library Humor. This is an amazingly useful resource for students of the Internet. While it was last updated in March of this year (this review composed in September), it's still among the best general resource sites that I could imagine. Highly recommended

  6. Internet Country Codes a special feature from the Source

  7. Internet Resources Newsletter An overwhelming resource that shows a admirable determination to cover the full spectrum of Internet resources. The newsletter features new sites, a resource archive, and reviews of Internet publications. While it's size is impressive, there is no search functionality to the site, and the listings (I'm guessing somewhere in the tens of thousands) are only browseable by issue or by alphabetical order. This makes finding new resources in areas of particular interest more difficult than it needs to be. Recomended

  8. Mecklermedia's internet.com is home to The List of Internet Service Providers, The Internet Products Site, BrowserWatch, WebDeveloper, WebCompare, and ServerWatch (among others. These resources are information-rich, clear and concise, and updated frequently. Highly recommended

  9. My Virtual Reference Desk: Free Stuff An alphabetical listing of just under 200 pointers to various free things available on the Net. While quite a lot of it is the usual shareware libraries and free screensavers, it also provides links to other free stuff sites that could have a person clogging up a multi-gig hard-drive in no time.

  10. URL-Minder is a free service from NetMind that notifies interested visitors when a site is updated. It's an extremely easy and highly configurable feature for site designers to implement and maintain. Highly recommended

  11. Whole Web Catalog One of ZDNet's shining achievements. It definitely lives up to its name, but it might be a little complex and frustrating for certain people. I'm rarely sure where I am when going to any part of ZDNet, and tend to only go there when I'm not looking for anything in particular. It's easy to find something new and interesting, but nearly impossible to find exactly what you're looking for. As for the search feature, you can't choose to search just the Whole Web Catalog, and a search of all of ZDNet returns nearly as many articles as any of the major search engines. Recommended
