ALL New 1998-1999 MHARZY Executive Board Elected and:
MOTHER'S Day Gift Bags, MHARZY's annual fund-raiser, has been an incredible success! We sold a spectacular 240 gift bags and raised enough funds to support MHARZY for the next year and when we host Tri-Cities next year! Special thanks go out to all MHARZYites who phoned and packed for the project. Next year's Co-Treasurers, Julie Cohn and Jessica Leitner, were invaluable this time around and are ready to take leadership on next year's Mother's Day Gift Bags.
MHARZY TAKES DEBATES BY STORM!
MHARZY, for the third consecutive year, returns from Debates hindered by the weight of trophies. In 1996, Ilana Aisen took home the Goldman Oritorical Contest (GOC) plaque. In 1997, Tanya Sermer kept the plaque with MHARZY, now joined with Jonathan Lear's MasterDebater trophy. At this year's Debates in Ottawa, MHARZY was represented by Marc Heimann and David Collin (Affirmative), Erin Balaban and Jessica Leitner (Negative), Jonathan Lear and Naomi Lear (Affirmative) and Adam Waiser and Julie Cohn (Negative). The skilled Debaters explored the topic, "Be it resolved that Reform Judaism support the equal teaching of creationism and evolutionism." Jon and Naomi (often referred to by their peers as the "Dream Team") took Best Affirmative Team with a total 165 of 180 speaker points (55 per round). Jon, Naomi, Adam and Julie together took the trophy for best overall team, and Naomi was named Best Affirmative Speaker and challenged EARTHY's Marina Kaplan (Best Negative Speaker) to the MasterDebate: "I'd rather be a hammer than a nail," but Marina, in stating that she'd "rather be hammered than nailed," took the MasterDebater trophy.
Till Next Time!
