I found William & Gladys in 1920 in Storm Lake Twp., Buena Vista Co., IA. Also in 1920 I found Clarence J. and Minnie in Early Town, Boyer Valley Twp., Sac Co., IA. In 1910 I have the Maxsons in Douglas Twp., Sac Co., IA---Clarence is shown as "J.C." and your William is "Willie" and is 12. In 1900 Clarence & Minnie are in Jackson Twp., Sac So., IA and William is 2. The family above Clarence is Charles Maxson---I think this is Clarence's uncle. The 1890 census burned so in the 1880 census I found a William Maxson with an 8 year old son named Clarence...I think this is your Clarence. They are found in Canton Twp., Benton Co., IA The reason I think this is the right Clarence is because of his age and the fact that the father William shows his own father to be born in VA and mother born in KY.****The Charles Maxson above Clarence in the 1900 census shows his father was born in VA and mother born in KY. The ages of William and Charles are right to be brothers. So far there is your William, with father Clarence, whose father is William...I found this post to the Maxson Forum on Genforum:           "Posted By: John Tylczak             Subject: Re: Joseph Maxson& Bethia Maxson d. 1747 NJ             Post Date:   September 27, 1999 at 22:18:19     I came across a biography of SIMEON MAXSON among the Canton Township biographies of a Bention County, Iowa history this afternoon. Says that Simeon was born in Harrison, VA December 10 1806, came to Iowa in 1854 and was a Baptist." My guess is that William is related to Simeon--but not the son of Simeon--maybe nephew? According to the LDS Family search site Simeon's father was George, his father Simeon. From there it is verified in the "The Maxson Family" book by Walter LeRoy Brown for Simeon's father to be Joseph and his father to be Joseph and his father to be John who is the son of Richard the first Maxson in America. Simeon Maxson appears on the 1856 Iowas State census according to the Benton Co., IA website: http://www.rootsweb.com/~iabenton/index.htm and the same website also has this about Simeon from their county history: "MAXSON, SIMEON, farmer, Sec. 21; P. O. Shellsburg; born in Harrison, Va., Dec, 10, 1806; came to this county in 1854; has seventy-five acres of land, valued at $3,000. Is a member of the Baptist Church; is one of those who paid off an indebtedness on the church of $2,700. Married Sarah Myers; born in Virginia, Jan.14, 1813; mother of four children -- George W., born April 16, 1835; Eliza J., born Nov. 3, 1837; Rebecca, born Dec. 10, 1841; John H., born Oct. 17, 1852. Had two sons in the Union army, James and George W.; James was wounded in the battle of Champion Hills; he belonged to the 28th I. V. I.; George W., enlisted in the 77th Ill. V. I.; was in the battle of Chickamauga, was taken prisoner, and was at Andersonville thirteen months; also six months at Libby. Mr. M. emigrated to Ohio, and lived there twenty-two years, then came to this place, where he has gained the friendship of all." There were a bunch of other Maxsons on the 1856 census.

PENSION ALLPICATION RECORDS CIVIL WAR

Edna- So good to hear from you. Both brothers apparently gave their age as 18 at the time of muster, but I have James (I have middle initial as A.?) being born 26 Feb 1845, so he might have been 18, but William, who I have being born 21 January 1848 appears to have perhaps lied about his age. The same day you sent the e-mail, I received William's pension file in the mail. What a coincidence. 1880 census lists him as being in Benton County, IA with wife Charlotte and five children. 1900 census lists Charlotte as a widow. This information I think we already shared. However, the pension file includes: • A copy of a marriage license for William Maxon and Lottie A. (looks like) Youel) dated 17 Oct 1871 in Benton County, Iowa. • An 1890 Bureau of Pensions document that states that "while on duty in Jackson, Miss on or about July 11, 1863, he was disabled with typhoid fever and resulting chronic diarrhea, varicose veins of both legs and piles and was treated ... at Vicksburg Miss and convalescent camp New Orleans La." • An 1893 document to the pension agency indicating that he will no longer be receiving a pension of $12 per month as he had died. • An 1889 Declaration For Original Invalid Pension from Huron, SD. He states that he is 45 years of age, 5' 9.5" tall with light hair and blue eyes. He states that he "contracted typhoid fever in Jackson, Miss on or about the 11th day of July, 1863 that resulted in chronic diarrhea, enlargement and varicose veins of both legs and hemorrhoids from which he has never recovered." • An 1891 Declaration For Invalid Pension from Huron, SD that has William's signature on which he spells his name "Maxon". • An 1892 Widow's Claim for Pension in which Lottie states that she and William were married on 19 Oct 1871 in Shellsburg by Rev. A.G. Martin, a Presbyterian minister. It also lists Capt. Henry Wilson as the commander of Company D of the 28th IVI. and "She further declares that ...William Maxson her husband, died at his farm residence in Huron, in the state of South Dakota   on or about the 18th day of May, 1892 of disease of heart." Curiously the only dependent listed is Mary Jane Maxson who was born Nov 26 1879 at Shellsburg, Iowa. There is no mention of Clarence, Clayton, Ada or Emory? • An 1893 affidavit in which two witnesses claim that Lottie has "no means of support and is badly in need of the help that a [widows] pension would afford her. That she is wholly unable to help herself and needs the attention of a nurse." • A 1939 letter to the Veterans Administration notifying them of Lottie's death. It was postmarked in Early, Iowa. So, that's about it. So place does he mention the name of his parents in these documents, not the names of his siblings, not his birthplace in Ohio. It is also somewhat odd to me that, other than Mary, the other children are not mentioned. [Odd isn't is that he didn't name one of his sons after his brother who died in the War?] CLARENCE MAXSON b.
