Val's page

St Seraphim Val used to run the bookshop of the Orthodox Society of St Nicholas, and one of these days she'll have time to tell you more about it. But in the mean time, here is a picture of St Seraphim of Sarov, who was a starets or spiritual elder in the Russian forests in the early 19th century. There are some books about him in our book store.

There are also several books by and about Fr Seraphim Rose, who was a 20th century American. After a nominal kind of Protestant upbringing he studied Eastern philosophy - Zen Buddhism under Alan Watts and Chinese philosophy, mainly Tao, under Gi-Ming Chien.

After a while he encountered Orthodox Christianity, and became an Orthodox Christian, and eventually founded a monastery in Northern California. His biography, Not of this world is a pretty substantial book, but very readable. It's also one of the books recommended for prospective students at St Herman's Seminary in Alaska.
