Briefly, two things: (1) influence over others, especially through his
voluminous correspondence.  Madison and Monroe were his "disciples."  He
became the "Sage of Monticello," the philosopher of republicanism and
American self-government, all set forth in his letters.
(2) establishing the University of Virginia and serving as its first
rector.
