In consideration of your background, I am certain you > are understanding of this. I know what you mean about a book being a living object. In fact, I believe you can experience the writer's "living" personality from a book. I had the fascinating experience of reading a book by an Indian mystic who had travelled to this country (in the late 19th century, I believe) in two versions: one was as written by himself, with peculiar syntax and vocabulary; the other in a thoroughly edited version of the same work. The first gave one the impression of a vivid and vivacious personality. The second was dead. It is awful what an editor can do to a writer's writing. The changes I made in the online edition of the Rayner text were hardly noticeable, and I feel quite sure did not destroy the spirit of the original.
