Miscellaneous CYF News and Rumours

This page owes a great debt to Jerry "Wolverine" Chan, who painstakingly translates dozens of articles on the Hong Kong entertainment industry every week at his HK Top 10 site. Please see Wolverine's site for more details and pix. I would also like to thank Sanney and John Charles, who have been circulating lots of neat info recently. Whoohoo! Sanney's HK Entertainment Review is now online too.

April 1999:

Jodie injures ankle in fall during new movie

From the South China Morning Post of April 9th, 1999. Many thanks to JC for the URL!

Oscar-winner Jodie Foster caused a scare when she slipped and fell in Malaysia during filming of her latest movie, Anna and the King.

Foster was taken for tests to the outpatient clinic of the Langkawi Hospital on Wednesday after injuring her ankle while on a break from shooting on the popular Malaysian resort island.

"It's probably a little bruised but she's fine," said her spokesman. "She just slipped and fell. She needs to rest up for a couple days and then we'll be back to shooting."

The injury was not expected to set back filming of the US$60 million (HK$464 million) blockbuster, which was scheduled to finish in Langkawi next week and head to Perak state, the spokesman said.

Foster is co-starring in the Hollywood remake of The King and I with Hong Kong action hero Chow Yun-fat.

Local crews have built lavish sets in the Malaysian states of Perak and Penang to recreate the Hollywood epic about a 19th century governess who was hired by King Mongkut of Siam, now Thailand, to teach his children English.

Thailand has traditionally objected to the story, saying it is historically incorrect, and has barred Hollywood from shooting the remake in Thailand.

Anna's retinue spends up big as it courts Malaysia

By IAN MARKHAM-SMITH for the South China Morning Post of April 8th, 1999. Many thanks to John Charles for the URL!

The Malaysian economy is getting a US$23 million (HK$178 million) boost thanks to a new Hollywood movie starring Jodie Foster and Hong Kong's Chow Yun-fat.

The Fox 2000 production of Anna and the King - a remake of the musical The King and I - is pouring the huge amount of cash into Penang after being refused permission to film on location in Thailand.

In addition to the money being spent in Malaysia, Foster is being paid US$15 million, her biggest pay day to date, to star as Anna.

Chow, 43, plays old Siam's King Mongkut but, contrary to speculation, he has a full head of hair in the film, unlike Yul Brynner, whose head was shaved for his starring role opposite Deborah Kerr in the 1956 version.

One of the major challenges Chow is facing is studying the Thai language, which he speaks in the film. American Foster, 36, is polishing her English accent.

Both the stars are also learning to ride an elephant, one of 19 appearing in the picture.

The picture is in its second week of filming after having been launched with a traditional Chinese dinner for the entire cast and crew hosted by Chow in Penang.

The film makers are anxious to maintain extremely good relations with Malaysia after a major setback when Thai authorities banned them from filming in that country.

Foster has hosted an elegant cocktail party for the movie people and local dignitaries in the small provincial town of Ipoh.

The biggest difficulty so far for the 600-strong cast and crew, who have been assembled from 20 countries, is battling the unfamiliar hot and humid temperatures.

"This is some helluva change from the previous site of the two Anna and the King pictures - filmed on the Los Angeles' Pico Boulevard lot of 20th Century Fox," said movie industry expert Michael Fleming, who writes for Daily Variety, the bible of the Hollywood entertainment industry.

Oriental Paparazzi Strike Again

Chow Yun-Fat's Thai King look was exposed once again yesterday when ANNA AND THE KING shot on location at a Buddhist temple. The scene took about two hours to shoot.

CHOW YUN-FAT'S COSTUME EXPOSED

So far, during filming of ANNA AND THE KING, Chow Yun-Fat has been able to keep his Thai king look under wraps. However, yesterday his Thai king costume was finally caught on film by photographers as he went out to do a location shoot. In his Thai king costume we can safely say that he looks truly majestic.

Filming took place yesterday on a beach. To keep Chow's look under wraps, the studio had picked a secluded beach to film at. The cast and crew worked quickly but some outsiders and local residents were around to catch a peek.

In the scene, Thai King Chow, Queen Bai Ling, Tutor Jodie Foster, and about thirty small princes are going camping by the sea. The shoot went smoothly. Jodie Foster and Chow Yun-Fat were often seen talking and joking together. To keep his Thai costume under wraps as much as possible, Chow often went into a makeup truck. He also often wore a red robe to hide the costume in. Still the look was exposed. (SANNEY: Seems to me he's still hiding it under the red robe.)

Entertainment Weekly blurb

From the April 2 issue. Russ Treloar wrote in:

Well...it's not much, but there is a interesting (?!) B&W pic of CYF in the April 2/99 (#479) of Entertainment Weekly, as he is the main feature in the "Cybertalk"(quotes from the net) section. The quote is:
"He's got a lot of street talk, you know?...He was a lot of fun, but half the time I didn't know what he was talking about."-The Corruptor's Chow Yun-Fat on the language barrier he shared with costar Mark Wahlberg, on Mr Showbiz

Thanks Russ!
