Miscellaneous CYF News Excerpts

This page owes a great debt to Jerry "Wolverine" Chan, who painstakingly translates dozens of articles on the Hong Kong entertainment industry every week at his HK Top 10 site. Please see Wolverine's site for more details and pix. I would also like to thank John Charles, Sanney, and Gordon Chan for transcribing and summarising many of the other HK articles, and Kathy Allard and Michael for their help keeping me up to speed on North American coverage of CYF while TRK was out.

Chow Yun Fat accepts settlement [against SUDDEN WEEKLY] after clearing his name

Excerpted directly from Wolverine's HK TOP 10 for May 13th!

Film star Chow Yun Fat and his wife filed a suit against Sudden Weekly magazine and its 6 editors and reporters for a libelous report and for trespassing their new home in Sai Gung which was under renovation. The plaintiff Mr. and Mrs. Chow Yun Fat agreed to dismiss the case after the defendants published full page apology on issue 141 of the magazine and paid HK$300,000 in a settlement.

The announcement made at the Superior Court through the Chows' legal representative stressed that the goal of the suit filed by Chow Yun Fat and his wife Chan Wui Lin was purely name clearing and not to deliberately attempted to obtain monetary gain. The couple plans to donate the sum to a charity organization upon their return to Hong Kong. The defendants on page 4 of issue 141 of Sudden Weekly published on April 11th admitted that its report in issue 134 regarding the "in law dispute" was without proof and that they trespassed onto the property for photos. Thus, Mr. and Mrs. Chow decided to accept the sum the defendant deposited with the court and thus ended the case.

Tom Cruise + John Woo + Chow Yun Fat = Mission: Impossible 2?

Excerpted directly from Wolverine's HK TOP 10 for May 13th!

More than a year ago Tom Cruise announced his plans to film a sequel to Mission: Impossible. He sincerely invited John Woo (Ng Yu Sum) to direct the film, an offer John Woo has accepted. The script is currently being written.

The sequel will revolve around two special agents, thus besides Tom Cruise, John Woo is interested in casting Chow Yun Fat in the other role.

John Woo's manager Terence Chang Ka Chun said, "Earlier John indeed did mention to me about his interest of Fat Jai starring in the sequel to Mission, thus I have mentioned it to him (Chow) as well. However since the script has not been completed, Fat Jai has not decided whether he will take the role. Also John is planning Fat Jai's other film King's Ransom. If all goes well King's should go into production first."

Chow Yun Fat currently is shooting The Corruptor in New York. Earlier when he was promoting The Replacement Killers in America, John Woo has also mentioned the sequel to him. He personally would like to work with Tom Cruise as well, but due to his film making principles, he would first have to look at the script to see if the character is appropriate and then if he and the film company could come to terms before accepting any role.

After Corruptor, Chow Yun Fat would first head to Europe to promote The Replacement Killers and perhaps star in his third film in the Westat the end of the year. Whether the film will be The King and I or King's Ransom, he said that would depend on which script is completed first.

Chow Yun Fat hopes to play a mute to get around the language barrier

Excerpted directly from Wolverine's HK TOP 10 for May 6th! And thanks too to Simon for earlier summarising this story for me...

Chow Yun Fat's second Hollywood film The Corruptor shot its final day in Toronto on the 9th. Chow Yun Fat was obviously relaxed as he joked with the local Chinese press. When a certain paper's female reporter complained Fat Gor treated the Hong Kong press better than the local press, he immediately expressed that next time he would personally take her to the Niagara Falls.

Originally the press conference was to be held in 1:30 PM. However the director changed his mind and pushed a scene ahead of schedule, thus reporters had to wait for nearly 2 hours. Luckily Fat Gor took time out to explain and hope that everyone would understand. Out of respect for Chow Yun Fat, everyone could only continue to wait.

Toward his performance so far in Hollywood, Chow Yun Fat is rather satisfied. His first film The Replacement Killers took in over US$20 million world wide, the highest box office figure out of all of his films. He said he is "exploding with confidence" about continuing his development in Hollywood.

His biggest obstacle in that development remains to be English. Chow Yun Fat honestly admitted that his weakness and said that even though film company has arranged for tutors, a 40 something guy couldn't learn as quickly as someone younger. Sometimes he doesn't even understand what the crew or the director is saying. Thus when a reporter asked what kind of character he would like to play next, he said that he hopes to play a mute -- no dialogue required.

Chow Down on Video

By Norman Wilner for The Toronto Star's STARWEEK magazine in May 1998.

A one-page discussion of the Arena Video releases (p. 78). I think it's great that these were reviewed in the media, and I particularly like the following intelligent remarks: "Special thanks to Winnifred Louis; her invaluable Chow Web site at www.oocities.org/Athens/8907/factor.html was of enormous help tracking down the movies behind the fake titles." And thanks to Norman Wilner for the plug, and for courteously letting me know when the article was forthcoming!

Chow Yun-Fat

By Current Biography staff for the May 1998 issue.

A three-page (pp. 9-11) article on CYF's life, with a pic by Steve Granitz. Most of the info would be old news to Chow fans; for me, the most interesting thing about this article is that CYF is deemed high-status enough to be profiled in CB.

QT, Howard Stern Trash CYF in Radio Interview

In a May 7th interview with Howard Stern, Quentin Tarantino went on a mini-rant about the coolness of Sorvino and the loserliness of CYF in The Replacement Killers. CYF ruined the movie, Tarantino said. "If you're going to make an American movie with a great actor like Mira, fuckin' learn English," Tarantino animadverted (or words to that effect). Just in case anyone's suffering from low blood pressure, here's the .wav file of QT gratuitously insulting CYF). I have to say, QT does seem really childish and immature as an individual -- it's a pity, because I think he's quite good as a director. I thought Jackie Brown was his best film so far.

Need to vent some rage after listening to the .wav? By far the coolest anti-QT flame, as far as I'm concerned, is Kissaki's QT is a loser page. I especially like the stirring background music.) (And thanks to Dan Century and Will for letting me know about the QT comments, and misc other QT misdemeanours!)
