Chumash
- The Chumash are the native inhabitants of the
Southern California coast near Santa Barbara, west from
Los Angeles. They formerly spoke a number of different
related languages, as there were different Chumash
groups, now named after the spanish-language places where
they lived. So, there are in fact different Chumash
languages: Obispeño Chumash from San Luis Obispo,
Barbareño Chumash for Santa Barbara,
Ventureño Chumash for Ventura... The Chumash
suffered greatly the colonization process, and the last
native speaker of a Chumash died in 1965. However, the
Chumash of today, several thousand people, are
reorganizing themselves, in several groups (some not
recognised by federal authorities), claiming their native
cultural and land rights. Our placenames are from the
Barbareño Chumash language. Chumash language were
grouped in the Hokan family, a doubtful grouping
criticized by many linguists.

Txumax
Txumax herria Kalifornia hegoaldeko kostaldeko jatorrizko
biztanleak dira, Santa Barbara inguruan, Los Angelestik
mendebalderuntz. Egiazki, hizkuntza eta talde desberdinak
ziren Txumaxen artean, eta bakoitza jentilizio espainol
baten arabera da ezaguna gaur egunean. Esate baterako
Obispeño Txumax herria San Luis Obispokoak dira,
Barbareño Txumaxak Santa Barbarakoak,
Ventureño Txumaxak Venturakoak... Kolonizazioak gogor
jo zituen Txumaxak, eta haien hizkuntzak hilda daude egun
(azken hiztuna 1965 hil zen). Hala ere, badira milaka gutxi
batzuk Txumax gaurko Kalifornian, eta berrantolatzen ari
dira, beren kultur eta lur eskubideen eskean. Haietariko
talde batzuk ez dituzte errekonozitzen agintari federalek.
Gure toki izenak Barbareño Txumaxerakoak dira. Txumax
hizkuntzak Hokar familian sailkatu izan dituzte, baina
taldekatze hori oso zalantzazkoa da.
