Yucatec

Yucatec is the Mayan language of Yucatan peninsula, the one once spoken by the builders of Chichen Itza, of the late Maya culture. There are some 700.000 speakers in the Mexican states of Campeche, Quintana Roo and Yucatán, and a few more in Belize. The Yucatec call themselves "Maya", so it was from this name that the term was adopted to name the well known civilisation and the group of related native cultures of Mexico and Guatemala. Nowadays, Mayan names are chic in the peninsula. Many modern tourist resorts which had never been Mayan settlements before nevertheless bear Mayan names, such as Cancun or Akumal.
