Zapotec
Some 300,000 Zapotecs in Mexico, mostly in Oaxaca. The
Zapotecs were one of the great Pre-Columbian cultures of
Mexico, centered around Monte Alban. The term Zapotec
comprises all of them, but, in fact, language varieties vary
greatly. Linguist estimates number between 10 and
50-something languages. These varieties or languages are
identified currently by the area or towns where they are
spoken. So far, we have a list of placenames for San Lucas
Quiaviní Zapotec, spoken by a few thousands in
central Oaxaca, south of Tlacolula. Zapotec languages
(alternate spelling Sapoteko) are of the Oto-Manguean
family. The native form for the name Zapotec is Di:i'zh Sah
in the variant of San Lucas, and similar forms are used in
other languages or dialects. One spelling we have found is
Didxazá.
