William Butler Yeats: Poet, Playwright, Visionary, Poltician, Novelist; The Greatest Ever Irishman
Yeats has been described by Roy Foster as the greatest ever Irishman. He is best known for his poetry. During his lifetime he published some dozen or so volumes consisting of over over 300 poems,many of whihc have found their way into peoples' hearts and into "Best Modern Poetry" Collections of all kinds.. But he also wrote plays, novels, and a good deal of non-fiction on all kinds of subjects, from politics to esoterica, from mythology to numismatics. Furthermore, he was involved in the search for a cultural basis for the Irish national struggle and eventually became a senator in the new Free State government. In 1923, he won the Nobel Prize for Literature. The range and breadth of Yeats's contribution to Irish life and culture is not always appreciated.
