Spiritual Meditation Using Playing Cards

In this game/meditation one uses a deck of 52 cards with a joker, along with one's own heart, soul, mind and spirit.

To see how the cards are set up click here.  This doesn't have to be exact.  The main point is to make it possible but unlikely that the higher cards are drawn early in the exercise.

I make a simple mandala with "AGAPE" circled in the centre, broken down to many aspects.  I then make a list of ways that I tend to categorise people (ie religion, personality, nationality, etc) and set up a letter or letters to stand or these categories (ie r=religion, p=personality).  These letters are distributed around the outside of the mandala (i do this randomly).  See finished game/meditation.

Once the deck is set up as above the cards are then drawn from the top of the pile one by one.
Each card represents an aspect of Agape Love (Universal Unconditional Love) and a type of individual one might meet.  As each one is drawn one asks him/herself

(1) What type of person does this card describe who is hardest for me to relate to in this aspect of love?
(2) Why?
(3) What understanding can I bring to mind that will help me to relate to this person in this positive way?

This may not be easy for most of us, seemingly impossible for others, but it can be a help for some who undertake it with sincerity and honesty.  This is the main part of the game/meditation.  The rest is just playing with the idea that the whole of Agape is made up of many parts, and can be come to directly and/or by dealing with these parts.

The rest of the game:

As each card is drawn, after dealing with what they represent as described above, they are circled, colored in, or otherwise marked.  Likewise as the three sub-parts of the four main parts of Agape are dealt with they are marked.  If a main quality comes up before all of its parts are dealt with one considers it as a whole as above and then marks it.  You no longer have to deal separately with it's parts.  For example if the Queen of Clubs (Patience) comes up you/we meditate on  patience as a whole asking what type of person overall is hardest to be patient with.  We ignore the categories at the edge of the page (what the seven, eight or nine of clubs stand for).  If they come up later we just ignore them; we have dealt with it as a whole.  The meditation is complete once either "Heart", "Soul", "Mind", and "Spirit" are all marked or when the joker comes up (and dealt with), signifying Agape Love in its entirety.

For example Let:

Joker = Agape
K of hearts = Heart
K of clubs  = Soul
K of spades =Mind
K of diamonds=Spirit

Q of hearts=Sincerity
J of hearts=Compassion
10 of hearts=Joy

Q of clubs=Patience
J of clubs=Humility
10 of clubs=Mercy

Q of spades=Justice
J of spades=God Consciousness
10 of spades=Understanding

Q of diamonds=Holy Recklessness
J of diamonds=Fruitfulness
10 of diamonds=Generosity

9 of hearts=V under Sincerety (see drawing 2)  --  note:    V in this example stands for values
8 of hearts=PA "        "                                                     PA stands for physical ability
7 of hearts=P "         "                                                       P stands for personality
6 of hearts=I "       Compassion                                        (see drawing 2 for the rest)
5 of hearts=R"        "                                                        note: these are determined by the player/
4 of hearts=N"         "                                                                meditator at the time of the game.
3 of hearts=V         Joy
2 of hearts=PA         "
Ace of hearts = P  Joy

9 of clubs = I under Patience
8=R (Patience)
7=N(Patience)
6=V(Humility)
5=PA(Humility)
4=P(Humility)
3=I(Mercy)
2=R(Mercy)
A=N(Mercy)

9=V(Justice)
8=PA(Justice)
7=P(Justice)
6=I(God Consciousness)
5=R(God Consciousness)
4=N(God Consciousness)
3=V(Understanding)
2=PA(Understanding)
A=P(Understanding)]

9=I(Holy Recklessness)
8=R(Holy Recklessness)
7=N(Holy Recklessness)
6=V(Fruitfulness)
5=PA(Fruitfulness)
4=P(Fruitfulness)
3=I(Generosity)
2=R(Generosity)
A=N(Generosity)

So if the 9, 8 and 7 of hearts are eventually drawn, this is the same as drawing the J of Hearts.
Likewise, if the J of hearts is drawn, it is the same as drawing the 9, 8 and 7.

And if the Joker is drawn before the four kings or their equivalent are drawn, it is like drawing all the kings and the game is won.

If one wishes to make a competition out of it he/she can keep track of how many cards it takes to get to Agape.  (The two times I scored it I did it in 30 and 29 cards/moves.)

Of course, this "game" focuses mainly on the mind aspect of Agape.  In order to develop it fully one also needs to live it, feel it and dream it.
